5D Mark III & More...

 32 Mega pixel Full Frame ?
 Digic V
 New 11 point AF system ?
 Will have the best video features of the EOS line

1D Mark V

 32 Mega pixel Full Frame ?
 Dual Digic V

 Will be a partial replacement for the discontinued 1D Mark IV and complete the merging of the 1D line

It has been a long wait for the 5D Mark 3 and 1DS Mark IV, EOSHD.com explains why.

You must have missed the other ten thousand threads that deal in worthless speculation. The search function works just fine -- when it's used. Good luck!

More believable rumors are 28 MP

And 40+ MP to give a solid difference between the 2 cameras for resolution. Because people bought the 5D2 instead of the 1Ds3 after the 5D2 came out.

No, 5D3 is still on schedule to be launched this fall so it has not been a long wait. And the 1Ds3 replacement has been a long time coming because of the overall slow global economy and possibly waiting for additional design time after the 645D came out.

I guess the first would be possible...

as for a 1DmkV (I notice a lack of an s) means to keep the current standard of 10FPS would require 320 mp/sec throughput, so I highly doubt Canon will double the current amount in a single generation...

I'm also wondering where you got the info about merging the 1D line, I've not seen any notices by Canon in this regard...

My thoughts..

Definitely full frame. 32mp would be great.

I would be disappointed by 11pt AF though. I really think that Canon should give this camera the 45pt AF system from the 1-series cameras. It should be better than the 7d, Nikon put their pro-level AF in the D700 (and presumably in its replacement) and there have been possible rumours that the 5D3 will effectively "replace" the 1DS range.

I indeed think the next 1D should merge the 1D/1DS. I was actually suprised the mkIV wasnt full frame, especially since the D3/D3S is.

l am beta testing the new 1ds5. Shhhhh, dont tell anyone!

I especially liked the " high-tech, extremely advanced " zoom sliding button... ;)

...and I get news that this particular Canon division, the one developing this camera, has been called by Canon " bean counters sans " and explained what it would do the company EF revenue life-line.

....They have since been re-assigned to further develop the "direct print" button.

I think we'll see a merger of the 2 1D series lines. 32mp, FF, 10fps, with a crop high speed mode too (a la D3s). Expect noise to be a stop better than the previous 1 series camera.

I heard some rumours today from a local retailer that their Canon rep had indicated the 5D mark III is not far away from being released, probably 1st quarter 2012 or maybe a sneak release before Christmas. I can't say I totally believe the sales guy, but anything is possible.

All of this guesswork ignores the actual reasons Canon might launch a new camera.

With the Olympics coming soon they need a new 1Dm5 soon to sell upgrade to Olympic photographers. This is especially true since many of those potential buyers consider the Nikon D3s to be better than the 1Dm4.

The 1Dsm3 and 1Dm4 probably share enough parts that it simplifies things for Canon to release a 1Dsm4 at about the same time as the 1Dm5. There are upgrade sales to be had too. The 1Dm5 is definitely the priority but a 1Dsm4 is likely too.

I think a 5Dm3 is not likely this fall because of internal constraints at Canon. Launching a new product is always an expensive and disruptive event for any company and their supply & sales chains. There does not seem to be a direct competitor for the 5Dm2: waiting six months (until the launch phase of the 1Dm5 is completed) probably won't lose any sales and will save a lot of money and heartburn by not competing with the 1D cameras for pre-consumer resources (testing, manufacturing setup, inventory build-up, etc).

I don't see the 1D and 1Ds converging at this time. They are two different cameras with different goals that happen to share a few similar parts. The 1D needs a smaller pixel count for sports work (no way is 32MP remotely likely) and the 1Ds much higher MP for studio work. Canon is more likely to move the 1Ds into the medium-format realm than merge it with the 1D. Were I a marketing exec at Canon I would be trying to make these cameras seem less similar to one another, not merge them.

...in and about the same ballpark as Nikon.

If the forthcoming Nikon D800 (and the new FF Sony) are using the new Sony 36MP FF sensor as reported, I would expect the 5Dmk3 to have at least 32MP, and better AF and video capabilities. I haven't a Scooby on the 1DS? If the Nikon D800 at $4000 shoots 36MP full frame for studio/landscape and 18MP at clean high ISO/fast fps, then the 1D/1DS replacement (at its old price point) would seem to have its work cutout. I guess time will tell...

I would not take that 36 MP spec seriously for a D800. For the D4x maybe.

How do you get 18mp cleaner high ISO from 36mp? Will pixels start to be not square anymore? For red and blue to be pixel binned to bigger square pixels, you get under 3mp instead of 18mp. If you only go for better "luminance" noise (not coloured noise) you still get only 9mp.

18 mp makes no sense at all.

I think there is something going on here. My suspicion is that both Canon and Nikon are going to drop the $8k high res brick, in favour of the 5D alike line that does the same job but sells in higher volume. Rather than the fast low res vs slow high res, they'll both be competing on the same ground. Given that Nikon will use a Sony sensor, and Sony has set the mark at 24MP on APS-C, 36MP looks entirely realistic.

Nikon has done this before (D1H) I'm not seriously suggesting that they'll do it again.

People misunderstand what binning is about, it increases DR by doubling the electron count fro a single dose of read noise. With read noise as low as it is on modern CMOS sensors, there is not much point to it any more.

Agreed
