Going on a journey of on July 8th at least 5500 km in our MH. Should I take a camera and maybe even some lenseseses. You can see by the map where I will be going and so give advice accordingly. Is it always good to go all the way there and then all the way back or is there another choice? Will we need woolen sox once we get to the Yukon? Will our still and video cams freeze up solid just like they do in the roadrunner series of informational cartoons? I hear they even have wild animals along our root so will we need a stick to beat them off? Are spare tires really what they are crapped up to be? Will we need AC or super heat? If I catch a fish will there be anyone there to clean and cook it? I heard that it is best not to wear underwear so that when a wild animal chases you it has a better chance of skidding into the ditch with what escapes from not wearing undies? Can we get a super serious sunburn from the midnight sun and if so is walrus blubber a good cure? Where can I get walrus blubber? Is it true that if you get 3 black fly bites you must go for blood and do they really BBQ the chunks they rip out from your limbs?

I may have more questions later.

I think you know which eq to take. I'd definiately have the camera handy at all times, since no telling when you encounter wild animals. The shortcut from Kitwanga to Watson Lake was mostly gravel (20yrs ago), but I'm not sure what's like today. I'd certainly check your spare/s...I mean really check. Since truckers used to fly through there rather fast clip, most vehicles would have a "wrap" in the front from wire mesh to prevent the flying rock from damaging the vehicle. Often oncoming vehicles, if not careful, would create similar situation.

Anyway Rte 37 is rather primal but beautiful...way less traffic than on AK/Canada Hway. Those days there was only one garage appx 1/2 way and not much else for services. I do recall certain spots with mt's to the West some bare trees and an eagle would land on one....and I'd shut off the engine to the vehicle and just creep towards it. One of the most magical places was Good Hope Lake....the fog covered part of the lake and it was visually stunning. I wouldn't rely on Cassiar much, unless it tried to redeem it's name from asbestos (excavation) company town. It's certainly a road less travelled.

Oh, you can get some neat shots of totem poles in Kitwanga...also more recently made ones off the rd to Prince Rupert. If you are super adamant about finding original totem poles, you may have to ask locals and travel appx 20 min to this small village.

On the way back (from Whitehorse) you may want to check out Laird Hot Springs, though they had some visitors of griz type....and unless they addressed this issue....this may be a potential threat (used to be real nice).

When you get to the end of the AK/CDN Hwy in Dawson Creek there is a special marker...it seems little cheesy to me. But, there is a bison ranch in town and you can see them roam from the road....quite a site.

It's been many years so some of it appears to be blurry. I do recall going over some pass and seeing some interesting goats/sheep.

Good luck.

Don't forget, it's takes much longer to get up north - the slow way.

I think I'd leave the BBQ lens at home, and ya never know - it might even rain on the south-side of Yellowknife. The MH thunder trap will probably need emptying before you get past the destination, so it's probably better to take a wrench-pump with you, unless you are going to use them tires, of course.

I've seen mosqueeeeto crap higher than Mt. McKinley north of 60' so a tripod will definitely come in handy when you are up there.

So have a good trip, and I think you will see it before I do, and besides, on the way back you can always fill her up again...IF, it's not too dark in the meantime.

I wouldn't bet on it tho...

This is a good parody of many of the posts on this site.

What is an MH though?

--Personally I would scrap all your maps, hire a guide and set out on a tour of Vancouver. If you really must go up north you should consider a cruise ship along the inside passage. They will at least get you back safely and who knows you should see a bear or two.

Well the parody ended as our journey began. 6,988 Km in total. We added Stewart/Hyder, Dawson City and Barkerville to the route. Absoultely brilliant trip. Roads were for the most part very good with the occasional frost heave and then on the return the flood damage around Chetwynd, BC was incredible.

Here is the first of many for all to play with with.

This group of Bighorns did not seem to mind me wandering around them at all. I think I was more worried for my safety than they for theirs.

The op's post was painful to read.
Painful because it reminds you of so much of the drivel posted on this subject?
What do I need to photograph mountains?
what should I take to get photos in Scotland?
What is the best gear for photos of a walrus with false whiskers?
