Link to giant 1ds image

1D and 1Ds RAW files have an extension of TIF.

The file you uploaded had already been converted, and saved as a TIF.

It gets confusing, to be sure.

I downloaded it, and have processed it in PS using some actions from Fred Miranda.

Looks a lot cleaner now.

I'm uploading it now. Once I get it uploaded, I'll send you a link so you can download it, and put it on your server. It's 5 MB.

PS -- you have at least one dust spot. ;)
Maybe I'm missing something. The files show up as " tif" images,
but won't open in anyting but breezebrowser and zoombrowser at full
res. I converted to 8bit TIFF for general viewing. In my d30, I
get actual
.raw extensions. Is this different?

yes the original tif that wont open anywhere but fileviewer is the raw file, that would be much more benificial then a converted tiff, also it should be about 1/3rd the size, you could also zip it up and place it on your server if you prefer, that way one can download a zip and not worry about the tif extension. Your original shot is very noisy more so then a 1250 iso shot should be in the water.

I've taken the 36 MB TIFF file, and ran it through a couple of Fred Miranda's actions in PS.

It looks a LOT better.

I've uploaded it to my site, and will give you the URL to download it.

After that, you can post it to your server for download.

I can't email you, because you haven't shared your email in your profile.

It's not raw. I dl'd it (btw fast server - took a little over 2 minutes!) and C1 doesn't recognize it, but it loaded straight into PS. I was also curious as to how C1 would deal with the noise.
  • DL
It didn't open when I clicked on it. I'll have to do it again,
saving it to disk instead.

Since I've loaded PhaseOne, I can take a peak at it.

But, if it's the RAW file, you should at least convert it to JPG-12
and repost. Most of us can't look at a RAW file from the 1Ds just
yet.

Well,

I don't want to come across as a 1Ds cheerleader, and I do take great pleasure in pointing out the negatives in things (gotta work on that...) but,

I looked over the tif file pretty closely and I don't see any (or at worst very very little) NOISE.

I think we have a problem with terminology here. Noice is data (pixels) that have a value (color, brightness, etc.) that is unrelated to the scene they are a part of - for example a black or red pixel in the middle of the blue water. On this image in the water I don't see any noise - what see is a change in color from one pixel to the next. I think this is normal resolution limited digitization of the image. I am a little surprised at the size of the steps in color, but that maybe "real" based on the scene.

The first link to the sharpened image is an example of oversharpening's affect on digitalization of an image. We need to remember that these images, no matter how many pixels we have, ultimately come down to digital images and not continuous tone images. If you hammer an image hard enough you can amplify the digitization and make the image look noisey.

Frank
Hold on. Before you bash the camera, bash the photographer. The
link to the unsharpened image is better:

My really bad Fall Adventures:
http://www.pbase.com/snoyes/fall_adventures_2002

Frank, I think that's a good observation. There are no blown out pixels, but the gentle transitions that you'd expect in the water are blown out badly in the sharpening. I put this original Tiff up to show that I screwed up this image; I think the original is pretty good. I will try some edge sharpening or higher thresholds and lower radii to see how it works.

It' a pretty good piece of equipment. We're all hammering it against whether images it produces are "perfect" (maybe justifiably) b/c of the huge price of the camera. But if you look at where we are today in digital compared to where we were just a few years ago, this is really just unbelievable.

I just downloaded and coverted the raw file, daylight, adobe rgb (matrix 4) even with no noise reduction on in camera, and no noise reduction afterward, there is no noise in the shot, I applied an unsharp mask in PS 7.0 on a seperate layer (luminosity) picture looks great I can send it to you as a jpg (about 3 megs ) or put it up on my server if you want, let me know, but I do not see any real problem with the file at all, you tell me if you still think there might be.
