Ricoh loves Pentax ;)

Is Hoya well known in Russia?

All that says is that Hoya will continue to operate the divisions they acquired from Pentax OTHER THAN the Imaging Systems division.

Ie, they are keeping the medical, DVD lens etc business to themselves.

The 'Digital camera Module' could refer to any number of components used by cameras. eg, LCD screen, etc.

Hoya never wanted the Camera business and they were never generous on funding R&D projects in Pentax.

(Which is utterly stupid IMO, They are a glass manufactuer at their most basic level, think of the synergy they can have with the camera div if they wanted to grow/ expand it).

Ricoh, on the other hand is looking into a way to EXPAND their consumer market presence. They are the do-ers and they have the ambition to grow Pentax.

I just hope the execution of this project to expand is well handeled by a good management team!

It could go either ways but I think this really is very exciting news indeed.

I love the idea of a "real" Camera Company buying Pentax. i agree there is a lot of synergy between the two company. Pentax will no longer be buried the digital divisions of Hoya, Inc. It can now roam proudly among Richoh's workforce without shame.

My only concern is what is the new name of the company ?
  • is RICHOH ( the buyer ) going to place its name all over Pentax DSLR ( the seller )
  • that is usually the case after acquisition, the buyer keep their name while seller lose its name: ( case in point, Sony bought out Minolta )
  • or is Richoh going to dump its own name in favor of using Pentax logo on all products?
  • neither BRAND is a hit with consumer, I prefer Pentax but I won't ***** if Richo decide to change it to its name
I hope Richoh + Pentax will create a new company name. Something that is only 5 LETTER LONG:
  • CANON (5 letters) = success
  • NIKON (5 letters) = success
  • MINOLTA (7 letters) = failed
  • PENTAX (6 letters) = struggling
  • OLYMPUS (6 letters) = also struggling, but new EP3 + Lite seem hopeful
  • SONY (4 letters) = doing alright
Call me superstitious, but FIVE LETTERS is the way to go in imaging business.
Seem there is a lot of synergy

Pentax have an ailing compact division
Richoh have no dlsr product

If Ricoh really want to make waves then this is the deal that could be the spring board for them.

But if they just want the prestige of a dlsr line the brand could wither and die.

Some of smart people said here before that HOYA would sell Pentax in 2-3 years after purchase...

Ricoh is almost unknown company in Russia and rather marginal photo brand in the world...

I don't see good future of Pentax...
.

Impossible to say for sure, but it seems to be more likely good news. Ricoh's core business can use Pentax Imaging more than Hoya's. Ricoh is larger than Hoya. Ricoh knows how to compete - it took on Canon directly in copiers and did extremely well against them. And it has a large distribution network.

A possible bad outcome: Pentax was just bought for the Intellectual property only, not the brand, and everything gets rebranded "Ricoh", and slowly undergoes.... a Sea Change. Sort of the Minolta--> Sony pattern, but worse.

I'm guessing it will be closer to the good-news path, though.

Hoya never wanted "thossse nassssty camerasssses" (imitating Golum's voice).

And Ricoh wantss it, my preciousss ... :)

For those who know exactly what they want, and do it, new horizons open all the new possibilities.

Trust me: Ricoh seems better

Ricoh did not purchase the Pentax brand name?
Where is that noted?

Really good question

Let's hope Ricoh do something quickly to show what it intends to do with Pentax. Being sold again is not going to help confidence in the brand unless it can show something new. Otherwise new photographers will just hesitate during this period before buying into Pentax.

Do you not realise, from the words 'possible' and 'potential', that he is speculating? (And an interesting speculation it is, too.)

No, no - that just was a possible bad outcome . Speculation, since we don't know Ricoh's real intentions yet and anything's possible. If you read that post I actually think the first scenario - the good news - is more likely.

I just realized the correct spelling for R I C O H is already a 5 LETTER company. Therefore, RICOH will bring more LUCK than the six letters PENTAX. I can visualized a RICOH K4 standing tall among Canon 7D II and Nikon D400

5 LETTER FIT LIKE A GLOVE:
  • RICOH K4
  • CANON 7D II
  • NIKON D400
I think I can get used to the RICOH brand fast. Already it look like it belong with the other two DSLR giants. Way to go RICOH

I agree that PENTOH is a fairest combination of the two company. However, the name immediately conjure up an image of PENTHOUSE , the porn magazine. Not a good thing.

Besides, PENTOH is yet another unlucky 6 Letters. Has to be FIVE for good luck.
PENTOH..

no, seriously, I am quite sure both names will be kept, at least that's what seems the most reasonable to me

RITAX?
RELAX?
RIPEN is awesome ;-) and a good omen for a new company.

RIPE = a mature fully grown and developed company . This is how I think a Richo-Pentax synergy company will become.

LOL on the name RELAX. Fun name that is for sure :-) Thumb Up to both.
