DPR: Too much open talk in News, how about making this the default forum?

It seems the "problem" of people posting general discussion in News is getting worse at the moment, and I suspect most posts are there because News is the first forum in the list and so is the most likely for new users to accidentally post in.

Can we please at least trial re-ordering the forum list for a few weeks to see if it changes, perhaps -

-- Open Talk
-- Beginners Questions
-- News
etc.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Agree. "News" is so cluttered with irrelevant threads it's hard to read.

I thought you knew that anytime anyone decides to buy a new camera and needs to know which camera to buy . . . that it is news!

Most especially if it is going to be an entry level DSLR!

Agree, but I'd reorder the list as
-- Beginners Questions
-- Open Talk
-- News
Because most of the off topic threads in the News forum belong in the Beginner's Questions forum. If they put Open Talk at the beginning, then the Open Talk forum would be cluttered with Beginner's Questions threads.

As long as we are being curmudgeonly, I'd like it if DPReview reverted to the original "gear related photos only" rules. It used to be that the only photos that were allowed were technical photos. i.e., "Is this photo an example of of my lens front focusing?" Any other photos had to be displayed in the Samples and Gallerys" forum. DPReview is not a site about photography--it is a site about equipment that is used for photography.

Who says . . . you (and a small handful of others)?

What do we do with our cameras . . . take technical pictures all the time?

I know I surely don't . . .

This site would be so boring if that is all there was to DPR . . .

Yes. I even proposed that very thing some months ago (although I suggested moving "News" forum even deeper). Alas, DPR's wheels turn very slowly. One would thing it would be an easy correction to make, but it seems IBM has more relaxed change procedures than DPR.

The proposal is currently working its way through the sub-committee phase and will shortly be transcribed by our resident illuminator, and put before DPR's board of elders for consideration.

That resident illuminator must be a sweet gig.

I've never actually been in the news forum. I didn't even bumble into the beginner Qs and open talk forums for the first few weeks that I was lurking around. I suppose those who are less used to using forums and the internet in general are more likely to just post on the first board that comes up when you hit the forum button. I think beginner questions might be a more logical choice for the default first forum. Most people are going to be asking questions about what camera they should buy anyway.

Please hurry it along Simon,I'm 80 years old in a couple of months----Then I suppose it doesnt matter---I forget what forum I'm in anyway.

I think you are desperately missing an Ombudsman in this process.

I would like to apply for that job.

Nevertheless, what I stated used to be the policy of DPReview. Non technical photographs were forbidden in all forums except for the Samples and Galleries forum. Granted, the enforcement of this was rather loose but this policy (for a time) was stated as part of the forum rules of conduct. This language is no longer in the forum rules.

The issue isn't about being anti-photography. It is about keeping forum threads on-topic. Right now DPReview's forum organization is a mess if you are interested in photography. If you look at the list of forums they are clearly still gear related. With only the Challenges and Galleries forum being photography related.

But you don't have to take my word for this. Compare DPReview's list of forums
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/

with Photo.net's list of forums.
http://photo.net/community/

If you want to post about different photography related topics you know where to go on Photo.net. This is a lot better than having photography related threads randomly scattered among the assorted gear forums.

If you wanted to find posts about nature photography on DPReview, which forum would you look? The "Canon EOS 7D / 60D - 10D Forum"? Or maybe the "Nikon D90 - D40 / D7000 - D3000 Forum"?

DPReview organization of forums is clearly gear related. Even if they backed off on enforcing this.

Might as well rename News Discussion to Also Open Talk , or Open Talk #2 and be done with it ;)

The state of the News Discussion forum has been commented on, with various suggestions, for years. It's clearly low on the DPR list of things to do.

IMHO, the issue is some new members don't know the site layout & navigation, and post questions in News that may not get enough visibility and responses. Consequently they may wander off to other sites. This is unfortunate as there are some very helpful members that are active in the Open & Beginners forums. Open would be a better forum for their first post(s) until they learn the lay of the land and/or get pointed to other specific forums.

Cheers,
Doug

Well, apparently it seems that the majority of posters here in the forums disagree with your postion as they seem to like to show images to each other.

So why would you want to stop that?

The world is always about change, and change has come to DPR in the form of people showing off their images.

And DPR has rolled with that change . . .

I think that if anyone here doesn't like that, then perhaps it is they who need to leave instead of trying to force your own ideals on the majority of those who have a differing opinion.

After all, the majority of us didn't buy our cameras to take pictures of brick walls and focus charts.

And most of us really aren't interested in adding those things to our favorite photographic subjects of choice, either.

I quit going to "News" because it was for all the crap. If you're starting new threads, I insist there be one for "pity parties". You know, the police officer asked me what I was doing, my wife won't let me get another lens, B&H won't let me return my three-year old camera, and Phil hates me threads.

Or, how about we just keep the "News" thread as it is which is really, "The silly thread that no one really needs to read" thread.

It isn't helpful that you are repeatedly misstating my position. I said

A majority of posters in this thread don't like off-topic threads.

If you don't object to people posting off topic threads, then why have separate forums in the first place? Are you advocating that DPReview abandon separate forums altogether and just have one big "Post on any topic you wish" forum?

If you don't advocate this and still want separate forums, then why object to my request to also have forums for different types of photography, in addition to the existing forums for different brands/models of cameras? The way that Photo.net does.
http://photo.net/community/

So that if people want to find threads about, say, "Nature Photography", then they will know which forum to go to? Is this really an unreasonable request?

Yes, too much open talk in News Discussion, and too much non-photography discussion in Open Talk, this thread being a prime example.

This forum should have gotten a off-topic/non-photography section a long time age.

I think you need to dig out your reading glasses . . .

I didn't object to having different forums.

What I did disagree with you was with the fact that you seem to think that posters should only be able to post images of technical things, like lens charts and other things that only show issues with digital cameras as opposed to showing here in the chats what different brands of cameras are capable of producing!

And that is real pictures of real subjects!

Thats all.
