I went to the PMA Imaging Expo in Sydney. it rotates between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. There was Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Ricoh stands, but where was Sony? They used to have a stand as big as Nikon and Canon but this year no appearance at all.

Maybe they are busy making cameras?

Sorry, the devil made me do it. ;-)

Take the scenic route! Life is too short to do otherwise.

They weren't there last year either. It would've been a great chance to show off their new gear, especially the a35 and nex-c3. Oh well, hopefully they'll be there next year cause it really is a good chance to show to the photography community that they're serious about the camera business, especially in Australia.

It costs a lot to be present at PMA (the total cost, not including staff, is a significant fraction of a million dollars for a big stand like Canon/Nikon/Fuji/Pana), and the bulk of the people who go are photo enthusiasts. With the enthusiast models still months away, and nothing out of NDA, we decided it wasn't worth the cost this year. I manned the stand last year, and the amount of foot traffic we got over the course of that day... it wasn't nothing, but I had a hard time imagining how the cost could be justified.

This has been an on going problem with Sony marketing; you have to spend money to make money.
Yeah, that's a fair comment as far as it goes. I guess the other side is that you have a certain amount of marketing budget for the year, and you've got to decide where it goes. If you attend PMA now, you have to run your TV ad in off-peak later... or whatever.
I don't think sony is proud of their currant offerings and speak only to the p&s crowd.
Ouch. I'm sorry to hear you say that- I think everyone here takes a lot of pride in the product, and they'd hate to think people thought otherwise. Of course with our last couple of releases for Alpha being targeted at P&S upgraders, I can see how it might feel like we're focusing on them to the exclusion of enthusiasts. That's not our intention- a lot of us are photo enthusiasts ourselves- but in the end, we've got to try to reach the people who are going to buy the product we have to sell. I think with our new cameras this year we'll be bringing our attention back to the enthusiast crowd, and it will stay there.

I'm glad to hear at least some of the staff are proud of the products. I had a very frustrating encounter with one of the staff at a local sony store who just seemed very disheartened with Sony in general and really made me feel depressed!

I hope Sony can get a bigger following here in Australia. I don't know where you work or what position you're in, but if you have any influence at all please tell them to make rental opportunities available! There is no 'try before you buy' available anywhere for Sony products. I think it makes it really hard for people to get a feel for what's available and see if they might be interested in it :(

Also tell them to stop being so stupid with prices. The mark up here in Australia is ridiculous. I recently lost the eyepiece for my a33 and a less than $10 part in the US will cost me over $35 here in Australia!

Sorry for ranting - that just really annoyed me. At this rate if anything is going to turn me off Sony it's the service, not the products :(

It depresses me too! Training retail staff is a big part of my job, and I'm really hoping to turn around people's attitudes when we do our roadshow this year.

This is something we're working on at the moment. It's proving pretty tricky, but we'd like to have something up and running before xmas!

I understand! It's good to get this sort of feedback. What I read on here goes into my feedback when we talk about serving the enthusiast market, so your voice is heard.

Sony don't have a big following in Australia , because the rip their oz customers off.

Sony RRP for a 70-400G is US$1599 in USA and in Australia it's AUD$2699.00 and 1$ Australian is worth $1.05 US, and this is across their whole lens range.

I have a A350 and A550, wanted too off load my A350 and get a A580 and Sony don't even bring the A580 into Australia, if I have to buy the a580 from the USA then I might has well my lenses from there has well.

sony care very little about it's Australia customers., I'm happy to pay 20-30% more to cover shipping and GST and Oz warranty , but not what Sony Australia charges .

Thank you so much for listening :) Best of luck training the retail staff & getting them a bit more positive & confident about products. Also I'll definitely look forwards to seeing some sort of rental system/try before you buy setup :)

Even if it's just a roadshow that goes to the different sony stores & shows off the new products (similar to Nintendo's displays at the EB stores) I'd be happier. I've been buying a bit of stuff second hand (such as my sony 70-200mm G lens) simply because I wanted to be able to see & touch & test the product before handing over my money. I really wish I'd been able to get it new and with a warranty.

Sorry, I'm going off on a tangent again. Thank you again for listening & replying. Best of luck getting the Sony cameras more widespread across Australia! I get the funniest expressions when I go to events and pull out my a33 - everyone looks at it and goes 'what camera is that??'

Are you going to the sony sessions on thursday phaelix? I'll be going there that night.

I do agree with training the retail staff. At the Sydney sonystyle store one of them didn't really know anything about the hvl-f43am flash that i was looking to buy at the time. I had to explain a few of the features to them about it.

@ Lineypi I get the same reaction with people when I have my camera out. When I was at PMA a few days ago people were just looking at my camera and flash when I was taking a few photos.

For sure I will. I'll be the guy who needs a haircut who's talking about cameras :D

Yeah, a lot of the Sony Center staff are really sharp guys, but they're not camera specialists. I only get a chance to train them a few times a year, and the F43AM kind of just rocked up between launches, so it more or less slipped through the cracks.

It's a nice idea. The hardest thing about doing something like that is actually communicating that it's happening to all the people who might want to come along. Don't suppose you have any ideas on how to send a bat-signal to all the alpha photogs in Sydney without breaking the bank?

People when registering their gear give their email address; use that database to get the word out. Ask on forums if people want to be notified of upcoming events.
Yeah, the rate of registration isn't huge, but that would certainly be the place to start. I might try to organize something like this for mid-October or something.

Am I the only Sony shooter in Melbourne.....? :( At least if that's the case you'll have an easy time contacting me :P I'll keep an eye on the skies lol

I might save you the trouble and put a post on a forum or two :) If we go to the trouble of putting together a complete accessory lineup you can bet we'll be doing our level best to get our time and money's worth out of it- we'd probably do all the east coast cities, and maybe Adelaide and Perth.
