After working on my NEF files and exporting them, they seem to loose resolution and/or degrade when am viewing the finished product on window explorer or any other viewer specilally notociable when I zoom in. Please advised as to which are the best exporting setting in order to get the most out of my raw files please see the below enclosed photos from last night. Thanks in advance.

Eric, I think your first answer was pertinent. If his file was reduced to that low resolution, by whatever software, that probably is the cause of the softness.

I work to retain the maximum amount of data in each image, especially if I may want to print them someday. If I need to generate a lower resolution jpeg for web use, I make a separate copy and reduce the resolution on it, keeping the original at the highest resolution possible.

This business of mastering file manipulation for digital images has a fairly steep learning curve. At the beginning I happily reduced file size, discarding valuable information willy-nilly until I figured out I might want that extra data. In fact, I often did. Once I had an offer for a magazine cover, but I found I didn't have a print quality copy of the image in question. That hurt, and I learned to keep fully sized images.

raf totally agree: had some wonderful images form a trip to italy in RAW format, made some nice .jpg shots and then downscaled them to 1200*900 for my computer screen saver. At some point i have deleted or lost the original RAW files and now left with low resolution shots of the whole trip :(.

Light Room 3.3 gives me the folllowing options:

Resize to fit:

-Width & Height
-Dimensions
-Long Edge
-Short Edge
-Megapixels

I usually go with megapixels thinking it would give me the full pixel count on my sensor.
Thanks to all for your replies--

Agree with the posters above. If you're going to resize and/or lower the DPI, your image should suffer. Rather than export, do a Save As in high quality.

What I do with my Raw is batch-process the NEF files to TIFF using Capture NX or ViewNX (if you don't have Capture NX). And than I'll make my final edits on the TIFF and Save to Jpeg at High Quality, using Photoshop.

BTW, the white balance on the two photos is off. It's too cool on the blue side.
