Hello, I have reported this problem 9 months ago and still have not found the answer, including authorized Nikon service center - they could not figure this out. The basic problem is: once I used the camera for about 120 shots, it starts showing a message in the LCD panel, saying something like "no CPU lens". I cannot adjust anything, nor the shutter would open. I recently found out that if I take the battery out for about 20 minutes, it will recover and works perfectly again, until about 120 shots later. Being a computer engineer myself, I am wondering if there is any bud in the firmware/operating system that manage its internal memory. It is a common problem in our business when the operating system does not properly manage its internal memory, it will trash it next set of command and "out of business" until "reboot". When I discuss this with my Nikon dealer service, they laughed at me. Well, it is a software driven camera! Any way, anybody has and advice? It is currently running D300s firmware 1.0.1 both A & B. Thank you in advance.

I just had a similar problem with a D300 and a Sigma 30mm 1.4. Only it wouldn't recognize it at all. I set it up as a non-cpu and though set at f1.4 the lens closed down all the way when I snapped a picutre. I couldn't change the f-stop and no AF I put 4 differnt lenses on the camera (3 manufatureres) and only the Sigma 30mm gave any indication there was a problem. Later I notice the AAs in the MB-D10 were dead although there was a Nikon battery in the camera I put another in the MB-D10 and fortunately the 30mm was on the camera and took off just as it should. So I guess the stupid question is have you tried a differnt battery configuration? Or do you have diffent options maybe borrow a ac supply if not.

Thank you for your inputs. I actually changed battery in numerous way, including different brands, Nikon vs. generic, etc. It just need the battery out for about 20 minutes to reset itself. Your problem description actually was quite close to mine. I will keep testing different ways to see how it might resolve it. A side note, even I used a fully manual Nikon lens and set the camera to manual mode, I still cannot take shot since the shutter would not release. It is almost like frozen up.

Yes, the contacts have been cleaned numerous times with the best electronic component cleanser. In terms of Nikon, I brought it in for service and they could not figure out what happened. When I said that it could be a firmware/OS problem, they said it is impossible. Well, I can see that if mine is the only one has this problem unless there have been more. So far, I just have to keep taking the battery out till it resets. I rather have it fixed.

I Love the pictures my Nikons take ( http://flickr.com/imrananwar if you want to see :-) ), but EACH that I have owned has had manufacturing or design defects. Each appeared after warranty was over. In each case they falsely said they had not heard of the problem.

In each case both S6 and 5700 known design flaws were repaired after I proved with printouts of dozens of similar complaints online. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Still invested ~ $4000 in a D300 with Nikon flashes and Nikon only lenses.

Sure enough, soon after warranty was over, same problem as yours. NON-CPU lens, total black pictures, inability to change exposure etc. even in full manual, barely getting viewable pics by setting ev 5.0 etc is enough. Have the same thing happen. Taking out battery for a couple of days gets it to recognize the lens, but then stop at random, or until next on-off cycle.

Totally disgusting quality of Nikon design/manufacturing. Taking it in to their location today. Will post what I find out.
