Some interesting information on the DCS505 at the following URL:

http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/dimaging/browse_the_products/cybershot_cameras/cybershot_models/dsc_f505/index.html
However, Sony get a bit carried away when they make the following statement:

"2" Hybrid LCD with brightness control (122k pixels) - Use the LCD for playback, or even for your viewfinder while taking shots."

Even for your viewfinder? There is no other way to frame a picture that I can see...

The description of the exposure system is interesting: "1/60-1/1000 (AE Mode) Second Shutter Speed - In AE Mode the camera will automatically select the proper Shutter Speed to capture fast moving subjects and freeze them in motion." It sounds as if the zoom might be focal length keyed which would be very useful.

Paul -

I'm not sure about what you mean. If the LCD is capturing 90-95% of the actual field, then framing is simply what you see on the LCD screen.

Notice what Phil's review says on Page 3 of his review:

"What no viewfinder? I'm going to stir things up a little now, with this Sony you just don't need one. There, I said it... Now, I couldn't have said that on (say) the Nikon Coolpix 950 or other cameras with lesser LCD's, but the new Hybrid LCD on the F505 is simply superb, the first time using it with the backlight off outside in very bright Singapore sunlight and I could see every detail on the screen, brighter and clearer than even indoors with the backlight on.. Truly a step in the right direction, I was totally at home using this camera without holding it up to my eye..."

Also, on Page 10 of the review, he says:

"Note: It may seem as though I zoomed in further for the 950, but I used the LCD on both cameras to align with the edges of the subject matter, the F505 seems to only give a 95% view on the LCD where as the 950 gave almost 99%."

So framing shouldn't be a real problem for most subjects.

Ulysses,

I guess I was not clear (and perhaps Sony was). I was criticising Sony's rhetoric, not the camera itself. I took the statement 'even for your viewfinder', as meaning that you could even go so far as to use it for your viewfinder. I just thought it a silly statement because you have to use it for your viewfinder. There is no alternative.

But I do not doubt that the LCD framing works well; this is one feature that is really attracting me to this camera.

(boy, I wonder why the F55 was getting slammed for not having an optical viewfinder...) :)
