Ok.. just got the G12, I have fitted a canon filter adapter, many thanks to the people here that gave me the advise on the filter adapter, I travel a lot and all I want is a uv fitted for protection and the canon adapter is a no brainer ...did not really buy the camera as a back up to my slr.. more for carrying with me all the time... I know very little about Canon cameras , so I not sure I have any input that could be of any value to you all on this forum ... but I would like to join you and give it a try

Welcome!

A G-series plus a small tripod (I mean small, mine is a $15 Optek that goes in the side pocket of the pouch for my G10) is a fabulous photographic tool.
Have fun.
cheers,
john

If I traveled a lot, would probably keep the adapter and filter in a separate bag. Never have needed extra protection for my 11, but it mostly stays in a fitted leather case.

I am on the cusp of doing the exact same thing...I hope to hear more about your thoughts on the g12 as I am also not a canon shooter but really am fond of what I've read on the g12...

I totally understand using a filter for a certain shot for effect what ever that may be. I don't understand why you need to protect the lens of the G12 since the built in lens cover closes to protect the lens when the camera is off. I would think if you drop the camera or a p&s it would cause more harm to the camera being so small how gravity may pull the camera. I agree a protective filter is a good idea for a DSLR lens for every lens.

I have the G12 and have never had any issue. I have owned the powershot G7 and other digital cameras. A film based p&s camera never needed it and if you did need a filter you used a Gel in front of the lens for the shot like a Cokin type filter.

In the end if you need to polarize or a ND filter sure why not get a UV it won't hurt. Not sure I would do the UV or protective filter alone?

I will keep you updated with my thoughts on the G12 .. 1st impressions it is very good, The one good thing about these camera is that you have a good DOF. Everything is sharp. The problem is that selective focus is almost impossible.

Ryan... This my second G12 , the 1st one did get lens damage in the form of a scratch, not sure how it happened, but I am beginning to think it was caused by the lens cap blades being grabbed hold of to tight when getting it out of the bag, to be honest the scratch on the lens was more of a niggle that I knew it was there than a problem..A lot of my work ahead is going to be in dusty conditions and it just gives me peace of mind to cover the lens with the adapter

Makes sense then for dusty conditions. If the scratch happens because of the blades then a filter won't matter since the blades are built in to the camera. If removing the camera and your fingers hit the blades that's different. Now that I think about this, my LX-5 uses a actual lens cap that you can tether to the camera so its not lost. Some complain it takes time to start shooting, but I think that's not a bad method after all. You can also add a lens in the same manor as a G12.

So sure, I would do the same thing I think. As far as the camera bag for the G12 I just bought the Black Rapid-snap R and I'll have to get to post pictures, but no camera bag from any manufacture is like this. It is really easy to get the camera out so not having to come close to the lens. I used the G12 and this bag on a couple day trips and it was great. An extra battery fits in the side pocket. The 270 ex flash and/or the battery will fit at well.

The camera actually slides into this bag and the camera strap is folded to the side last. When removing the G-12 the camera will not fall (you have to see the bag for the whole story). The bigger bag to this may work perfectly if you still need the lens tube and filter attached.

I kept the neck strap on the G12. I attached the screw to the camera attached to the camera bag strap (again you have to see the item to get a better idea) any way I am using the shoulder strap of the black rapid so I unzip the bag and pull the G12 or slide the G12 out and I can still use the G12's neck strap if I want. As long as you have it on you shoulder the camera can not fall accidentally to the ground.

Again, I said the 270 ex fits. but with a little bit effort the side pcoket zips, but I think it will not break the zipper. The next option is the size bigger for this bag (just a hair bigger for maybe a micro four thirds camera)
