Just downloaded Magic lantern Firmware for 60D - fantastic!

Amazing features for both video and still shooters - literally turns 60D into a new camera. Here are just some:

Exposure aids: zebra stripes, false color, spotmeter, histogram
Focus peaking
Rack focus
Stack focus (Live View only)
Cropmarks (16:9, Cinemascope, Fisheye)
Intervalometer (classic or HDR)
Silent pictures in LiveView mode
Trap Focus: camera takes a picture when something comes in focus
Remote release with either the LCD face sensor or audio trigger
Onscreen audio meters
Manual audio gain, selectable input source, disable AGC and digital filters
Display time remaining during video recording
Debug functions (display CMOS temperature, screenshot, logging)
Fine tuning for ISO and shutter speeds; also ISO 25600
Kelvin white balance
Clean LiveView display without any overlays (selectable)
On-demand auto tuning for ISO, shutter & kelvin white balance
Quick access to some useful settings like HTP, ALO and contrast
Extra info displays: lens data, focus distance, DOF, shutter count, clock

This alpha version seems quite stable - but do not hold me responsible for any problems if you download it. :-)

550D user guide here (almost the same features as 60D)

Sorry 7D users - don't know if this will happen for you, though 600D version looks iminent.

"Remote release with either the LCD face sensor or audio trigger"

The EOS 60D has the LCD face detector? I thought only the xxxD line has it.

Those specs are for the 550D. Alex, the developer, has not yet written specific docs for the 60D.

Thanks for bringing ML to our attention Sam. We have been waiting for the new procedures.

I wonder about loading it yet...do you think our 60D's need to have the latest Canon Firmware updates to install the ML?

cheers Dave S ;)

Oh, it's OK thanks Sam. I see the versions needed for installation on the actual download page.

Yes, Dave - you need Canon's latest 1.09 firmware before installing ML.

Ya know, out of all of those things I just want audio levels while I record.
I'm gonna wait till full release on ML. I'm not into bricking my new baby.
Well, there is no "full release" of ML. The program is tested by developers and users, and is continually changed and updated with new features. It is a continuing process - not a
"finished product".

I took the jump, am thrilled with new features, and not -too- worried about bricking my 60D.

There is no completely "safe" time to install it - exactly when (and if) you want to jump on is up to you, and there will always be some risk. You must evaluate the risk to benefit ratio and decide.

Good luck!

I used this to install - it's for the 550D but procedure is identical, and was approved by the developer.

Make sure you install Alpha 12 - latest release, and follow directions carefully.

Install at your own risk. I am in no way responsible for any problems or issues if you install this firmware!

The ML firmware clearly shows how Canon crippels their cameras. If ML could add, besides all the cool stuff, also micro focus adjust to the EOS 60D, then it would be awesome.

indeed:
  • lack of MFA;
  • lack of min. shutter speed in Auto ISO;
  • forcing ISO 400 with flash in Auto ISO;
  • lack of EC in Auto ISO in manual mode;

ML developers listen and often implement user requests, if they are possible and not restricted to limitations of camera's hardware.

They will listen more to those who have taken the chance and installed the firmware and are willing to test new features, not people who are just waiting for their favorite feature to "magically" appear.

(pun intended) :-)

My EOS 60D will arrive in about a month and putting ML firmware on it will be the first thin that I will do. :-) If there will be a ML version with MFA, I will be ready to test that feature.
