I've already sent an email to Nikon directly and haven't heard back yet. I wonder if any of you could tell me if I'll have a problem with the software bundle and my WIN NT operating system. Not sure if I'll purchase the CP 3500 or 4500 just yet.

If the software is not compatible, could I simply use a card reader and a 3rd party photo editor like photoshop? This is probably a better option in the long run anyway, but I'd like to hear some advice as well. Thx.

I wish I could give you a more definitive answer. It doesn't specify Windows NT in the manual, although it does list 2000 Pro, which is very similar to NT. Don't know if that helps you or not....

The camera works with Win XP, and I'm told it works with Win 2000. I don't know if it works with the older NT - there may not be device drivers for it.

Well, yes, if NT at all recognizes your camera when you connect it. I don't use Nikons software at all - I treat the camera as a removable disk in the OS, copy the files to the HD, and edit them in Photoshop - but your OS must in any case have drivers for the camera, and I'm unsure if NT does.

If I was you I'd contact Microsoft and hear what they say. Or I'd ask to borrow the camera from the shop, and try.

I think you'll find that Windows NT does not support USB at all... or any PnP for that matter. I believe there was a PnP "fix" for WinNT which allowed limited Plug n Play with some add-in cards but it did not AFAIK cover USB. The first MS Operating Systems to support USB fully were Windows 98SE and Windows 2000. In fact when WinNT was being sold there were not that many computers which had fully functional USB hardware.

I can second that. I tried mightily to get some functionality out of our Windows NT systems to no avail. Neither the Nikon software nor Photoshop Elements worked, nor could I use the USB port. I ended up buying a whole new computer system.

After reading these posts, esp yours Reimar, I browsed over to dell.com and ordered a new system. We've had our current dell for 2 yrs now, and its been 2 yrs of NT related headaches! The system started life out as my wife's PC at work and when I started working from home full time, it came with me. When I left the company, they simply gave me the computer.

Anyway, my wife just bought me a CP 3500 or 4500 for X-Mas (she won't tell me which, she had the gall to have it shipped to her office...the nerve!) and I started to worry about software compatibility issues. So now, problem is solved!

BTW, Dell's offering some pretty good deals. I ended up with their 4550 Series, 0% interest for 6 months & free shipping. I figure I'll send them $100/mo for 6 months and it's hardly noticeable out of pocket.

If I can just get my wife to let me have the camera before Xmas, it will be the perfect happy ending. Maybe if I give her her gifts early, it will help. Any advice?

Did you get a monitor with a USB Hub or a PC with front USB socket? One or the other makes life a bit easier.

How about all the shots of her, in that dazzling new dress, at the company Xmas party you'll miss?

Well George, since I didn't even consider front USB sockets, would you mind sharing your phone number so I can check with you before I make purchases in the future?

And thx for the tip about the xmas party pics. I'll put it to use.

Best,

I bought a Dell late December 2001 and never thought of a front USB port, but there are two there and two in back. Probably all their newer ones have front and back USB ports.

I use the front one all the time to plug in my card reader. Good luck.
