If you'd like to test the new PhaseOne software, here's an "image from hell" to try:

http://www.neonlightsimaging.com/images/FB3B5785.TIF

All I ask is that you respect the copyright, but also post (or email me to post) your results, and an explanation of what you did.

This venue has AWFUL orange and red lights (and blue in certain spots - don't come in to play in this shot) that leave terrible hot-spots.

There's nothing obvious I've found that should be neutral gray in the shot (unless it's buried in shadows or is very black) to help out with white-balance, either.

Have fun !

(I need to install this software now and have at it, too).

Can you spell terrible... ISO 1600 and 1 stops under...
I took this Hellraiser for a ride in the Phaseone DLR software and the RIC2 ..
no sh*t ... the difference is amazing... the DSLR totally eliminates
the bad colors in the channels.

Sharpening settings in the DSLR: Soft sharpening and threshold 21
amount 250.

Really bad... but usable after the PhaseOne has done its job.

A hand job in PS will probably take ages...

One stop under-exposed?

I've got blown Reds and Greens as it is. (PS -- I dialed in -2/3 EV on the camera).

Sorry DavidP,
The exposure for scene is fine... its a low light setting.
Done some more testing in the phaseone software. The scene light is
somewhat orange, right ?

I have tweaked the balance further (If you do this while color warning is on is very easy to see the blown out areas - you can almost eliminate the blown areas.. i started out by balancing on the white text in the background and trimmed the balance until the "right" look was there ).

Take a look the difference in the blue channel after processing
with the Phaseone software. Look at the guys face or hand...
the difference it hard to believe...

Ok, after cranking the EV slider way back to to 0.7 and some tweaking with
the sharpening the image is now ready for.... oh wait, its not mine :-(
I wish I could post the images. Please to so when you get the change.

I am not sure if he is a tan man or not so I could warm him up a bit more, I have not run this through neat image yet but it looks good, and all this with an expired phase one, had to revert to fileviewer and breeze

My note about copyright was just to keep people from trying to sell it (as if they'd know who to sell it to - lol).

I white-balanced on the text, too. I slide the contrast and EV sliders all the way to the left.

Here's my attempt:

I need to try to do this in YarcPlus, though, just to see the differences.

It IS nice to see results so quickly while editing, that's for sure.

With a small lowrez image its impossible to tell what you have obtains here...

I took a peek at your low-res in PS... you just HAVE to try this image in the phase software. Just look at blue stuff on his wrist and all over the guitar and shirt in you picture... its not there when you convert with the phasone software.

AFIK the trail was out today so your trial cant be expired already ?
Try and remove it and reinstall it to a different folder or something...
(stuff like that always happens to me btw, but this time i've been lucky).

Stephen,

Personally, I think that your image looks more realistic. The red shirt in the background looks good, the blue jeans are blue, and the face (on the right, his left) looks like skin :) The text in the background is blue, but that COULD have been due to the blue lights that David mentioned, although you would really have to be there to know the actual scene coloring...

Great job to all of you on "fixing" a problem image :) Isn't digital wonderful?!?

Later, I am going back to playing with my 24-70L now :D

Yours is too blue back where the sign is hanging. That's where I got my white-balance from.

But, that gives a pretty decent-looking image where that songwriter was. He was bathed in orange light.

If I really wanted to be mean to you, I'd post an image of the entire stage, where some are in blue light, some in orange, and some in normal. LOL.

That venue drives me NUTS! Not just the colors, but the hot spots that develop on the faces.

Thanks DavidP,
The noise levels corresponds with what I am getting but its hard to

judge from a downsized image. The colors: personally I think yours are too greenish... You took the picture... so your balance is THE Reference for this shot. Did you try and tweak the balance to get a better result or is this IT ?

no good tried uninstalling and reinstalling in a new folder and again "your 30 day trial has expired" then an error any ideas would be helpful.

All I did was balance on the text in the background. This would NOT give the correct colors (for normal light) on the songwriter.

I didn't mess with trying to get him right (as if he were in normal light). I'm not that good at doing that sort of thing.

Neither one REALLY looks right. In reality, he was bathed in orange light. If one wants reality, that's what the image should look like in the end.

I could always post a really tricky one, where the light color varies across the stage. Hehe.

Here's the sepia version of THAT shot.

It beats me... Do you have another computer to try it on? -
I know it sound ridiculous... Sorry, but I cant think of any reason
why the software expires on you when you have not even
tried it yet. I wish I could help you.

Keep it up, and I'll be sending that full-stage shot. ;)

I imagine that's about how it would've looked with normal tungsten lighting. Good job.

I swear, I'm gonna get the sound/light man there drunk, then rip out his gels. :)
