After months of saving and research, I finally let my wallet do the talking and picked up my D100 last night. I love it! I'm desperately trying to wade through the information overload that this camera presents and I have a few questions:

1) From reading many of the comments on this forum, I have decided to shoot mostly in RAW mode. My question is what setting should I use for in-camera sharpening? Should I leave it in the default 'Auto' mode, or should I turn it off completely?

2) I tried to go to Apollonario's (spelling?) website and download his custom curve... The website came up as "not found". Has he moved his website?

3) I'm not that familiar/comfortable with my knowledge of color matching. I will be using Nikon Capture and Photoshop Elements for post-processing. I don't know whether to use one of the sRGB modes or the Adobe RGB mode.

Well, that's it for now... I'm sure I will have more questions later! Thanks to everyone that contributes to this forum - you've been a big help!

Congratulations! Just a note of caution. For some reason a few folks have had NC3 crashes using Apoloinario's curves. This is not to criticize his work in any way. Just be aware that if NC3 starts crashing and then crashes repeatedly the curves should be dismounted. There is supposed to be a fix available. Search the index for NC3 and crash.

I love my D100. Even my wife commented on the improvement in my pictures. While I didn't try to hide the D100 purchase from her (I used my own spending money) the last camera I bought (Coollpix 5000) she said "Now is THIS ONE going to be your last replacement camera?" I figured she would only ask the same question again with the D100.

Anyway, last week she said. "By the way I did notice the new camera..and you pictures ARE better."

YES!!!!!

Gee... I am glad I am not the only one! My wife see's new cameras and just shakes her head now. Does not even bother to ask. In the last few months I:

Bought a D1
Sold my 990
Bought an 880
Bought a 5000
Sold the 880
Bought a 5700
Sold the D1
Sold the 5000
Bought a D100 (just got it yesterday!)

I hate putting myself through all the misery.

eBay can be a great place to buy/sell digital cameras. Easy to lose $$ so you gotta be careful. The 880, 5000, 5700 were all bought well below what I thought was retail. I actually sold the 880 and 5000 for more than I paid. The D1 I lost a little so overall I am about even.

I moved my website to http://fotogenetic.fade.to

This new site has my curves. I'm in the process of making newer ones, unfortunately my USB cable broke!

BTW, the problem with NC3 crashing is a Nikon problem that is solved by downloading the latest NC3 upgrade, which I just downloaded. Although I haven' t been able to test this out, others have said they now no longer have any problems with custom tone curves.

Happy Thanksgiving.

As I'm interested in the same questions as Andy, I wonder if anyone of the members of this forum can give answers to these topics. I also sold and bought some digital cameras over the last months, but now I came to an end with my D100. So therefore please try to answer these questions which are really important things for new users of such a complex camera.

Apolinario,

I no longer have any crashes using custom curves after upgrading to Capture 3.5. I think your curves work great.

I use "Low" or "None" for in camera sharpening and then do my final sharpening on PhotoShop 7 using Fredmirandas sharpening tool as well as his saturation tool on several cases. I really enjoy the results. If you are going to print, I recommend Adobe RGb, SRGB for web. I shoot everything in Mode II and then can make any changes in Capture if needed. Again...just my 2 cents and it really comes down to your taste. Take a few shoots in different setting and see what you like.

I will try to answer from my limited experience:

1. If you shoot in RAW-mode, it really doesn't matter what setting you use for in-camera sharpening because you can always change it later. The RAW-file contains the luminosity -values for every pixel of the CCD, a thumbnail in jpg-format, all of your in-camera settings and some additional meta-data (exposure, what lens, flash-settings etc.). So in-camera sharpening doesn’t actually change anything in your picture, it just tells Nikon View and Nikon Capture how to show your photo on-screen.

With that said, I would recommend you to use normal or high sharpening because it affects the thumbnails in the RAW-file and you will also see the effect of the sharpening in Nikon View.

2. No comments as I have not used his custom curves. I’m sure they are worth trying, but the day only has 24 hours and I have to pay for my camera ;-)

3. I would suggest that you try a few settings. Depending on your subject, lightning conditions, post-processing, quality of your computer screen, calibration of your printer and a multitude of other factors, you may or may not notice any substantial differences between the settings of color mode. Like the in-camera sharpening, color mode can be changed if you shoot RAW-files.

All the best with your new toy!
