NIght SHot function

Hi,

Could someone explain to me what is the nightfunction for in Sony 717. I dun think it is used for shooting night scene rite?

Nightshot turns infrared lights on to illuminate the scene and the sensor switches to an infrared sensitive mode. The image looks green, but if there is bright lights you may see some other colors too. Nightshot allows you to take photos in low to no light conditions. You can also use nightshot in video mode and take videos in complete darkness which is pretty cool too.

U mean for normal mode other than the nightshot, the infraread lights are not used? So for shoot night scene like city skyline, I shldn't use nightshot mode?

The only other mode that uses the infrared lights is night framing which allows you to aim the camera in complete darkness but take a notmal color flash picture. In all the other modes besides nightshot and night framing, the infrared lights are not used. If you are shooting a city scene at night and you want natural color, then do not use nightshot, try using the scene mode set to twilight as a starting point or manual mode.

Tks Shay. For a moment, I thought sony 717 uses infrared lights to focus and this is why it is faster than most cameras. Does 717 have an auto-focus assist lamp? If not, why is it that it can focus faster than most cameras?

It uses a Hologram Pattern to focus in low light. It's emitted out of the 3rd little circle, at about the 3:15 location, on the lens face. It isn't used/necessary in good lighting. The 717 is faster without it, but it's a big help in low/no light.
