My 5D just self-destructed today :-(

Canon did NOT call in 5D's for inspection and/or the fix. Never.
They most certainly did, but they could not fortify the mirror without getting the camera back. And they conveniently waited until after the 5D2 came out to make the announcement, which limited the number of returns even though they mirrors falling off was an issue half way through the 5D's product cycle.

I will say no more. Good day!

I just had my 5D serviced with a new shutter. I would hope that they would have spotted any problems.

From what I read people who use their cameras in high humidity environments are at most risk as it errodes the glue they used to attach the mirror.

When I contacted Canon UK they told me they would replace it only after it had failed even though in USA they had started a recall. I suppose UK is not really a high humidity environment hence less need for a recall, or we are less liklely to sue!

My mirror fell off yesterday at a wedding. The couple were announced into the room to eat, I pressed the shutter button as they approached and....darkness. Error 99. Took the lens off and the mirror fell out.

That's why we have two bodies I suppose!

What a shame! After all the threads about the 5D mirror problem folks are still not getting their cameras fixed.

Update: Canon just sent back the camera, they put on a new mirror and I took one picture and it looks fine. I must say Canon Service made things very easy -- they paid for the shipping, I sent it back and they shipped it back, with email updates along the way.

I will give it a workout this weekend :-)

Well, that certainly is good news!

Ken is correct. Canon issued an advisory that noted they would fix the camera at no charge. The word "recall," which carries heavy legal baggage, at least in the United States, appears nowhere.
