Warmest goodbye to Pentax

Nothing wrong with you moving on... but the K10D was slow, slower then the K20D, slower then the K-7 and K-x and K-r and much slower then the K-5... so go on and find another brand that suits you but don't blame it on the AF speed of a camera that is 5 years old. if you never bothered to give the K-5 a chance then the writing was on the wall, you were going to move to another brand even if you couldn't come up with an excuse to do so. Again nothing wrong with moving to another brand, just don't try to justify it to the rest of the forum for your peace of mind with a petty weak excuse.

EDIT, just read that you couldn't easily get the K-5, thats too bad and a better reason for switching.

Wow, that list is loaded with mistakes, errors and omissions....useless.

Care to share how this is true? Pentax does not equal value in many instances. The high end Nikon lenses have a higher price, but let's also not forget many of those are full frame and Pentax has little if any lens to compete in many segments against Nikon.

Care to share why he will be spending 30% more buying Nikon Lenses?

Nikon 35mm 1.8 is around $200
Pentax 35mm 1.8 $875
Pentax 35 2.4 is about $200. Pentax 35 F2, is no longer produced, but can be found for 450 dollars. And... the FA 31 Ltd... is something unique. It's like comparing a Leica 35 F2 and the Nikon 35 1.8. You just don't do that if you are willing to someone take you seriously.
Nikon 85mm 1.8 $450
Pentax 77mm 1.8 $700
True.
Nikon 50 mm 1.8 $120
Pentax 50mm 1.8 Doesn't exist
but actually... you could find several old 50s that while manual focus, they are way cheaper, and about the same performance, but with better construction.
Nikon 180mm 2.8 $749
Pentax 20mm 2.8 $959
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-180mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEOI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307117943&sr=8-1
And, BTW... the Pentax lens is way better than that one.
Nikon 300mm F4 $1199
Pentax 300mm F4 $1299
True.
Tokina 35mm Macro $299
Pentax 35mm ( rebranded Tokina ) $539
True... but you are paying for the Limited construction and assembly.
Tokina 100mm Macro $449
Pentax 100mm Macro ( rebranded tokina with weather sealing ) $629.00
False. It is not the same lens. And even if it was, try to buy a weather sealed Macro lens from Nikon or Canon. Good luck with that.
Tokina 11-16 2.8 $600
Pentax 11-16 2.8 Tokina makeover - Doesn't exist
True.
Value and pentax are no longer a selling point for most people. Seriously.

And yes we can plug in the 35mm 2.4, or the 35mm F2.0.. but in all reality, both systems have some good value.. and in many cases both systems are NOT cheap.
Try to get facts right before pointing the finger.

Most of my AF problems disappeared when I started using the rear AF button instead of the shutter button. It makes a BIG difference!!!!
Hi Miles

I'm new to the K-5, have moved from a Panasonic GH2 in order to get weather sealing in both body and macro lens (tried to go with Canon 7D and then Nikon D7000 but no sealed macro), the K-5 rear AF button seems to work like the shutter half-press to my untutored finger, can you tell me what gets better, please? Thanks!

Mike, I don't think I was looking for or presenting any EXCUSE :) I believe I was quite straightforward in giving my REASON. I still think you are one of nicest persons on this forum :)
EDIT, just read that you couldn't easily get the K-5, thats too bad and a better reason for switching.

Don't let the screen door hit ya in the bu** on your way out. The K-5 out performers your Nikon, but that's cool, it leaves another K-5 for me !
It wasn't there for me :) so go on, get your bu** to the store and pick one up :)

Miles, would you please clarify how using of dedicated AF button improves AF accuracy and speed?
Thank you in advance,
SG

It was love at first sight; I was never able to put this camera back on the shelf. You got my point...
I can appreciate your joy at going into a camera store and feeling the camera in your hands and knowing instinctively that that camera is for you.

You have had a couple of sarky posts here, but frankly I don't really care who buys what, there is something for everyone out there and it's great to support camera stores, as nothing beats holding the camera, comparing it to others and chatting with the staff and they always look after you if you later have a problem with the kit.

Good luck with your Nikon, I've heard it is a lovely camera. Nice to see you kept the K10 for 5 years. I have had an embrrassing number of cameras over recent years, something that with hindsight I now regret

Congratulations on your new camera. It's your free choice as a democratic citizen of the world to choose the camera you want.

It doesn't matter the camera that is used. What matters is the passion. The heart. The drive. The desire to create something fantastic. This could be achieved with a Canon Mark IIIV or a 2megapixel Kodak point and shoot.

But faster autofocus capabilities help out a lot when you need that important shot that happens in a blink of an eye. I was taking photos of penguins at the zoo and autofocus helped out tremendously.

It's great that you used your K10 for five years. You must have excelled at using it judging by the kilometers you must have put on her.

Some folks here tend to upgrade their cameras every year or so. They probably never experience the camera the way it was meant to be. To be put in a situation where your at the edge, it's either fight or flight, it's now or never. It's just you and your camera and you both need to dig into your reserves to get out of the situation. You push yourself and your camera to the breaking point. You both give it the max. And you get the picture and you get the job done.

D7000 is a better choice than the K-5.

Depends on his needs.

I wouldn't be wasting my time here trying to reason with some of these people. You stated quite clearly, and in an inoffensive manner, why it suited, "YOU," to change systems. Then in your response to "Audiobomber," you stated why you opted to not get a K5, again, in a clear, and inoffensive manner. Your posting here, is nothing but a simple "Adieu," to Pentax, yet some have chosen to start a slanging match, and to dry to deride you. Good luck to you in your future with Nikon. Call back and show us some images, we are not all "fanboys," or "cheerleaders," here. ;-)

Have a good day.

My old good K10D with all lenses and accessories now goes to a novice but very keen photographer who, I'm sure, will have a great time with this powerful tool.
You have done a great job here.

You will never be happy because you chase a perfect camera body and a best marketing promise, but a novice appreciates the mystery of photography. You'll be rewarded in heavens, my friend.

That's just too bad because K-5 was your number, but if N Dk7 is right for you that's how it has to be.

Nikon 85mm 1.8 $450
Pentax 77mm 1.8 $700
True.
The 77Ltd should be compared with a the Nikon 85mm F1.4 in class, only the 85mm F1.8 in aperture
Nikon 50 mm 1.8 $120
Pentax 50mm 1.8 Doesn't exist
but actually... you could find several old 50s that while manual focus, they are way cheaper, and about the same performance, but with better construction.
There is an F 50mm F1.7 that can be found, though it usually gets sold for $170-$250

Ok, first off you link to Amazon. Amazon price is almost ALWAYS HIGHER.

Hell Amazon resellers have had the 31mm Limited for $2000 before. Just because Amazon shows something in stock for a price, doesn't mean that is the GOING PRICE.
Get YOUR facts straight, sir.

Try BH photo. The Nikon 180mm is cheaper by a considerable margin. And where do you read that the Pentax it's better? Photozone rates the Nikon better along with many other Nikon lenses that are also cheaper.. and the Nikon doesn't have to deal with SDM issues that Pentax has NEVER addressed.

I guess it's easier to turn on blinders once you shoot ONLY pentax. I am glad I keep an open mind and shoot both systems... for now.

I wonder if people on this board who comment about the K-5 being fast to AF, or considerably smaller like calling the D7000 a "two handed camera".. actually have used either one? Seriously. Sometimes you guys are so damn blind it's unbelievable.
