The only time a smaller sensor with the same pixel count is superior to a larger sensor (aka higher pixel density) is when you are focal-length limited.

That's in yen, not dollars. Of course, 70 million yen is still $85k :).
The Japanese numerical system is a bit complicated, enough so that it throws off computer translations.

Everything is counted in order until you reach 10,000. This is called "ichiman". Ichi=1 and Man (pronounced mahn)=10,000. 20,000 is "niman", as in 2 (ni) units of 10,000 (man).

This camera costs nanajuuman, 70 units of 10,000...or 700,000 yen.

The 10,000 Yen bank note is the largest one, kind of like a US$100.

There is no "million" in Japanese, the next unit is 100,000,000 (ichioku)

B&H has it listed for less than $7K. SUCH a deal!

Strange how the camera body is more expensive than the kits on Sigma's site. One more thing Sigma screwed up.

'Hit Refresh if pix do not appear. Flaky ISP at work.'

Its not 4608 megapixels either, thats the x dimension of the resulting image. The camera results in a 15 megapixel image. This is just a trainwreck of a thread. It sounded like a joke, but it was just completely wrong.

We can all read the sigma post, apparantly better than some, and no, its doesnt beat anyone. Its a very very expensive 15 megapixel camera.

Or maybe, just maybe you don't have sense of humor?
It does not sound like a joke, it is a joke!!!!!

Too funny! At least it is entertaining :P

:-)

But I think that thing is actually a good investment - years from now, when museums will fight over the three bodies that Sigma actually sold of these...

On Kakaku.com, the Japanese site where retailers compete for who will have the lowest price (kind of like the polar opposite of ebay), the current low price is ¥627,490.

http://kakaku.com/item/K0000254394/?lid=ksearch_kakakuitem_title

At today's rate that's $7,657.12 USD.

Of course the camera is not actually out yet so expect prices to fall as soon as it hits the shelves (and most likely....doesn't sell).

For comparison, here is the chart listing the current low prices for Canon gear:
