I'm thinking about adding a new lens to my kit. I have the USM 24-105 (very nice indeed) and a Sigma 100-300 (a bit clonky in comparison but OK)

any suggestions for either a USM long zoom or a super wide angle zoom.

Any suggestions..Thanks

I've got the 70-200f4 L IS at the long end and the 16-35f2.8 L II at the short. They both have their knockers but I'm very happy with them. I also purchased the Canon 15f2.8 fisheye a couple of weeks ago, love that as well, and as I find the reviews I'm reading about the Samyang 14f2.8 incredibly hard to believe, I'm buying one tomorrow just to see the image quality for myself! I think you'd be very happy with the 16-35f2.8 L II or any of the Canon 70-200s. P.S. This an excellent site for Canon lens reviews. http://www.eflens.com/

I also have the 24-105 for my 5D Mk II and despite it's shortcomings it's my most used lens. The biggest issue I have with it is its performance at the wide end and for that reason I like the 17-40 F/4.0. The 17-40 is in the middle of its range at 24mm and generally it's a great performer. I pondered the 16-35 but... more money, from what I've read and seen a marginally better lens but it takes larger filters. With the 17-40 my polarizer and cokin X pro adapters rings are interchangable on all of the 17-40, 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8 and 300 f/4.0. Why not rent one and see what you think?

Then get the 50mm 1.4 (or better). The 1.8 is a bargain but very cheaply made and you need good glass to get the best outta the 5D

The 50/1.4 is old USM. My USM died twice already. It is rumored to be on the update list as it really needs to be improved.

Or should I go for EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens and then later buy the new EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Fisheye Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens when it comes out - when ever that happends...

Hmmm so what you are saying that it is not that good. Yea I know that nothing is as good as a fix linse or what you call it.

So maybe my question should be - what would be a great lense for landscapes?
