What exactly is a STILL LIFE?

ok so when I asked my fiance that was his answer... my was more a picture of an inanimate object.... but this is on the fly... as requested... hope it helps....

I gather it has no people. Is it a single object?
A group of objects? Or..?
As I understand it (in the sense that it was originally used by painters), the life bit comes because you drew/painted from life (i.e. with the subject in front of you, rather than remembered) and still because it, well, wasn't moving. A bowl of fruit is your classic still life. I believe it can be either one object or a group. Not sure why a landscape isn't a 'still life' under my description above, but I'm sure someone else will let us know!

LMFAO!!!

as far as i know a still life is a group of items, arranged or found - that doesn't move. a bowl of fruit, a pile of books, stuff like that is a still life... technically almost anything that doesn't move is a stil life, though usually it carries a theme of some kind.

I'm game for a beating.
I just posted this http://www.pbase.com/image/7928458
Do folks here think this is a still life?
It qualifies in some ways, not in others.

Comments?

by definition, it probably fits. but it may not be what people think when they think of a still life...

According to dictionary.com...
still life
n. pl. still lifes

Representation of inanimate objects, such as flowers or fruit, in painting > > or photography.
A painting, picture, or photograph of inanimate objects.
And the definitions they give from three separate dictionaries all agree. So, your photo is indeed of inanimate objects and qualifies as a still life.

But as always in the challenges, the voters will decide!

BTW, nice picture!

My non-authoritative opinion is that ‘still-life’ implies subjects that were once alive. I’ve seen legit art that contains images of corpses of dead game presented as still life…but not a grouping of objects that have never been alive. However…I’ll gladly accept your boats as still life on the basis that it’s a pre-set shot of inanimate objects. Cheers.

In these challenges, it's all up to the voters to decide. I think we're usually rather lenient.

I personally think of a still life as inanimate objects that have been set up or arranged in some way. I wouldn't personally think that the kayak (is that what they are?) shot is a still life because it was more of a found shot. Of course this could be argued, and I certainly don't think anyone would argue if you submitted it.

I would suggest looking around the house for some interesting objects and setting them up in some sort of interesting arrangement. Lighting, lines, and texture are often really important elements in good still life photos. This is more of a challenge to think up something interesting, set it up , and shoot it rather than a challenge where you can just find something and take the shot.

I tend to agree with your definition; certainly that's how I have always approached it.

However, I thought, given some of the posts above, that some discussion on an example might be illuminating.

One or more inanimate objects
Arranged in some way by the photographer

Popular subjects are bottles, fruit & vegetables, flowers, vases, wine glasses, etc. Yes, these may seem cliche, but the challenge is to make a good photograph using common items by using the lighting, composition, color etc.

Who ever knew this would be so hard :o)

i'ts always harder then it looks. the hard part is to find props that all go with each other. grandma's closet and shelves is a good place to start, as there is always a bunch of chachki's there.

technically jim's boats are a still life, but it isn't a true to life still life. as the whole point of this challenge is to compose the picture in your mind before you take it. paying close attention to background and foreground materials. teh subject, theme and arrangement (think general store in an old village). lighting, angle, etc. it's a challenge where you need to use your mind and ability - and not just happen to find it outside somewhere (which is why i like this one, and is why i've been doing still lifes for a while now). i've also found that knowing this info would help me on my digital art, as you need to set these things up in order to cut them out.

I think we are all in agreement. The kyacks will sail away until another time. They served their purpose.
