HB-33 and HB-45 lens hood the same?

I just bought an HB-33 lens hood for my 18-55mm VR

Then I found out there was a HB-45.

So I researched and found:

HB-45 is the lens hood for AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
HB-33 is the lens hood for AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II

So is there any physical difference between the two or it just has different part numbers?

The HB-45 is the newer and better version. I believe the HB-33 is a screw-on hood whereas the HB-45 is a bayonet mount.

They are both listed as an optional accesory for the 18~55 VR.
f.y.i. I have the lens but have not used either hood. I don't like the mount.

I don't think the bayonet hood is simply a "newer and better" hood. The screw on hoods are for lenses that rotate whereas the bayonet ones are for ones with a fixed lens. If you switch them around then you should get flare.

Unless something has changed recently the lens should be the reason one hood is used with one version and not the other; I can't test the difference between those two versions of the lens since I don't own them.

I just went to check and Nikon list both hoods as optional accesories for the non-VR version, but only list the HB-45 for the VR version of the 18~55.....

I don't think there is much difference between the lenses in terms of rotating fronts though.

According to this thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1034&message=28812259&changemode=1 the 18-55 does spin.

Regardless, hoods are specific to lenses so my advice is to make sure to get the correct one.

If it's a screw in, it would be an HS not HB hood.

It is a snap-in hood; really, it should have been designated 'HS-33'.

I think that the difference is in the texture of the finish (HB-33 = smooth, HB-45 = mottled/crinkled)

Screw-in hoods are 'HN' (hard) and 'HR' (rubber)

I have the HB-33 for my 18-55 VR lens. It is a bayonet mount. The difference between the HB-33 and the HB-45 is that only the HB-45 can be reversed on the VR lens.
