I've read somewhere in this forum that it is possible toremove the thins screen film on the LCD. As mine is with some scratches I wnt to do it, but wnat to know if it is difficult to get it of in one peace (not to put it back on, but to prevent me from ending up with a LCD with thousands of tiny parts of the fim...

Is there anybody who did it? Was it difficult? Is the creen without the thin film stil as good as it was new?

Thanks for helping me!

The film is primarily the anti-glare coating. The LCD itself still has the same resolution and look without it, but the surface of the LCD becomes much more mirrorlike and both picks up reflections and sunlight much more easily, making use outdoors likely less effective without a very good lens hood or shading technique.

I ended up having to remove it from my TX1, because it had suffered so many scratches and scuffs that it was actually making it hard to see - it was better to just remove it at that point. I went with a simple compound for cleaning glass stovetops - no scratching agents but powerful enough to lift the remnants of that film. Linseed oil would likely work just as well - though I haven't tried it (that's what we used to remove pinstripes from cars back in the day).

With my NEX, I bought the Sony screen protector so I didn't have the same scratch problems with this LCD - figuring I can just replace that if it gets too scuffed up.

Sorry - I'd probably try what David recommended in the photoclubalpha article (GGS or Giottos) but don't have firsthand experience with any LCD protectors.

I put on the new protector and it looks great.

But did I lose some glare reduction by removing the plastic film. It seems that it's harder to view the image now than before.

Or am I just imagining things?

Looking at one of the ebay sellers, it seems that the display light sensor is covered by the black surrounding. That would mean the display will always think it's dark and dim the backlight, that might be the issue ?

really good link, thanks for that!

one thing though that i have wondered for a while, does the black border on these glass covers not mask the light sensor for the LCD stopping it from working properly?

Thanks all for your very helpfull answers! I will remove the film layer and go for some of the protectors from e-bay..

I love this forum for the help it gives!

I removed mine about 8-10 months ago and replaced it with a high end anti reflective iPhone 4 anti glare screen protector. Works very well but if I had to do it all over again I would of left the old film on it and just lived with the one small scuff I had. I think the Sony film has a slight edge over my current setup.
