Hi,

I realize this question has been asked several times recently, but I wish to compare several different possibilities.

I am looking for the best of the batch of digital 5 megapixel cameras. I have looked at the Nikon 5700 but heard about low light problems and lack of AF assist lamp feature. Should this still be a consideration? who knows when you might need to shoot in low light. I do like the feature of the Nikon.

Other consideration besides the Nikon 5700 are the Sony 717, Dimage 7hi and the 5050 or G3.

HELP, someone help me with your info and experience on which is the all around best camera, non SLR, I would consider up to the 1300 dollar price range. I need to purchase this camera in the next 3 weeks.
Happy thanksgiving to all.
My best wishes.

Dear Perry,

We have just had a bloodbath at the Nikon forum because a Sony owner said that the Sony 717 "had no competition". Please, do not frame your queries with words like "best", "top", "supreme" etc.

It would be better if you explained your situation. Then, we can offer custom advise, rather than display our prejudices.

For example,

1) level of photographic ability
2) previous brand ownership
3) the type of photography you will be doing
4) any long term plans
5) Do you absolutely need 5mp?

In the end, we can only channel in the rite direction. In the next three weeks, you have to get your hands on the shortlisted cameras. One will fit you like a glove. The others won't work for you, even if it is the best camera of all time.

Hope this helps.

Good morning Perry:

I recently invested in a Sony 707 (before the 717 came out). My 707 takes great pictures and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of their skill level. I'm sure the 717 is just as good. The 717 had some focus problems when it was first released but, from what I understand, those problems have been solved. I would recommend the Sony. I would certainly invest in one if I was still looking. By the way, the reviews on this website were a great help to me before I bought my Sony. Regards.

Hey,
Thanks for the thoughts so far.
How will I use the perfect camera for "me"?

1. I will use the camera in everyday situations and will probably shoot in some low light settings, like in restaurants, in a darkened basement or house.
2. I will take photos from a viewbox, mainly xrays.

3. Since I am an intermediate user, the complexity is not that important, but I want to get photos for presentation, with excellent resolution.

4. A good all around camera, with 4-5 megapixel and something greater than 3x zoom if possible.
Any thoughts,

Thanks again in advance.

Hi Perry,

From my experience with Nikon and Canon, I would suggest that you look at the Canon G3. Its photos look good and require little editing. It is user friendly with lots of features, if you should have the time to experiment. Its 4mp is sufficient for good 8x10 prints. It has an AutoFocus assist light that helps in AF.

Any camera should be able to take photos of the viewbox, You will need a tripod.

Check the stores in your area. The camera should be widely available at this time. I suggest that you buy from a place with a return policy. If it does not work for you, just return the camera.

Good hunting.
