Has the E-p2 been eclipsed by the E-pl2 or is it still worth buying? I've been trying to decide on which body to get for a 4/3 camera. Locally I can get an E-p2 for $799 CA (includes EVF) or the E-pl2 for $550 CA (without EVF). If I buy the EVF then the E-pl2 becomes the same price as the E-p2. I must admit I like the retro quality of the E-p2 but is the value there.

I always wanted ep2 with evf. too bad no ep3 yet. I had ep1. I loved it as it was and shoot well at iso under 800. ep2 perform well. i want ep3. epl not as good but shoot higher iso. look like good buy that i would get ep1 and evf.

I'd suggest spending some time using both to see if the ergonomics of one appeal more to you. Also, try the VF-2. If you decide you don't like using an EVF, that definitely changes the price side of the decision. If the E-PL2 comes with the newer kit lens, it may AF a little faster than the E-P2. The cameras are similar enough that either one will be ok.

Don't forget to look at some Panasonic options, too.

EP2 was announced in Nov 2009, so everyone is looking at Oly awaiting newer P model. Including myself, I own EP2 since last Sept and liked it much better than EPL1. But reality is that sensor is 3 years old (EPL2 is same sensor too) and it's need to be refreshed.

I shouldn't worry about the Ep-2 being eclipsed, IQ(read high iso) progresses only incremental with newer models, which are actually downgrades if you look at build quality and ergonomics(read controls)
I use the ep-2 with vf-2 now for doing outdoor model sessions and like it alot.

there is one big minus though: you can't use any flash when using the vf-2, i wish the ep series have extra x/fp connector, but maybe this will be included with the next ep-x

. . . With the expected release of a E-P2 successor in the next month or two, Olympus will likely be clearing out its inventory by lowering the price much like they did recently with the E-PL1 & kit lens going for $399.

I see it's on final clearance locally. I wish they had included an inbuilt flash. When do you think the E-p3 will drop?

If they were the same price i'd definitely go for the E-P2, it's the silent pack horse of m43, not too many people ended up with this because the much cheaper EPL's were similar. I went for the E-P2, it's still the only camera I rely on, I sold everything else, it takes bumps and scratches, and I wish all these comparisons over the years were done against it rather than the EPL's.

People say the sensor is outdated but things are going crazy with technology, Nov '09 was only 1.5 years ago, Oly and Panasonic are shoving so many models out people expect it now, I can't believe it when I read people writing "The GH2 is in the middle of it's product cycle and the GH3 should be out soonish" ... i'm only 28 years old, but that's crazy to me, it just came out. rant

Same with the iPhone, I wish product cycles were mroe like 4 years and we saw geniune improvements rather than these small incremental ones. further rant

. . . Originally I think it was supposed to arrive or at least be announced right about now but the tsunami in Japan has changed those plans. I'm thinking June now but some think that it might be later in the summer.

One of the things that put me off the EPL series was the lack of thumbwheels. They did add one to the EPL2, but it's the fiddly little ring that goes around the switch and has you inadvertenly activating features on occasion.

Both EP1 and EP2 have that beautiful vertical thumbwheel right by your thumb, one of the more inspired controls I've seen on a digital camera, and also have the EPL2 ring wheel. (which I rarely use) EPL2 replaces the vertical thumbwheel with a video button, that I could live without.

So if you change settings a lot, or work in manual exposure mode to any degree, the EP2 definitely has an advantage there.

Besides, it's such a sleek little body, so well made.
