Come on SD1!!!

The only thing I would really need is tethering. Again nobody knows so far but if history is an indicator it would seem no on tethering with the SD1. Then again HoyaTax hasn't pushed tethering out the door for the 645D/K5 either and they sort of promised it...sigh, I don't wanna go back to Canon. Really I don't wanna!!

Bob Van Ooik, a well-respected Sigma photographer on these forums, on his X3 Magazine site said there were rumblings he heard about Sigma developing tethering software for the SD1.

It's not a deal-breaker for me, but I would love to have tethering with the SD1.
Oh that would be OUTSTANDING Matt...for me I do almost all product shooting studio work so tethering really is a must have. It really helps. But if a camera has a very functional liveview (something i don't see on the SD family yet) then i can work around it. Lack of tethering stopped me from moving the the K-7 and is a factor why I have not grabbed a K-5 yet. The K-5 can tether via a third part app a guy out there in the ether wrote called PK Tether.

But will certainly keep my fingers crossed for it...I don't need to get anything right now but in a month or two that could well change. But at least it gives me some home this beastie will be really useful for me. I mean other than as a shiny thing...hahahaha...

Make that three of us...it's a regular PentaxForums reunion. ;)

Actually I'm interested to see if the mirror box on the SD1 can be modified to allow Pentax lenses with no modification. My dream is to have a K5 for high ISO and an SD1 for amazing color/detail work (with the same lenses on both). :)

A recent Pentax user modded out a FF Canon DSLR to remove the need of clipping the aperture level on his lenses. If the same can be done to the SD1... ;)

Anyway, I too am rooting for Sigma. I just couldn't justify the switch with the SD14, but I'm hoping the SD1 will be the camera that starts the "revolution" as their marketing states. I can't help but follow rytterfalk's blog and this forum, something about that Foveon sensor really sparkles!
hahahaha...well it sure it, it would seem!! Same for me, the SD15 was just not fully gestated, yet, though it's a dandy camera but for me not quite there. So when I saw the feature set and demo video of the SD1 I was sold on specs alone.

Here is hoping it's everything it could be...then comes my true dilemma but I know the answer...keep my set of Amigos and slowly build out an SD1 rig...and oh what a shame it seems it is going to take only the best glass...oh, gee, darn I am so broken up over that issue...hahaha!!

And like you I think I would grab the SD1 for my studio rig and add a K-5 once it reaches it's price low point later this year. But the SD1 looks good enough for even my cheap behind to buy early, well a couple months in anyway and that is waaay early for me.

I'll definitely keep an eye on info about getting our Pentax glass on the thing. The Amigos and the 35ltd should resolve enough to let the sensor do it's trick...but if not I am sure there is a way to grab a few Voightlander lenses...again what a darn shame...the Voightlander 125/2.5 on this sensor could be flat scary good. Same for the 40, 50 and 90... :D

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know if the SD1 will have the status screen (not sure what it's actual name is..) at the top of most cameras? I looked at the photos of the camera and it looks like it may be the same style as the Canon Rebels that use the lcd screen for changing/checking aperture, shutter, etc.

Anyone can confirm this for me? Or is it not for sure yet?

Thanks!

  • Lack of live view really means that I would need the option to be able to change the focusing screen - I am really sensitive regarding the spot on focus and having tons of fast old M42 and K-mount glass I will really not go for the SD1 if it has no way to properly focus these.

The current SD cameras have pretty much the same light up focus indicator that you'll find in your Pentax view finders, however they won't beep without a auto lens.

I can't picture Sigma changing this much, although I hope they incorporate the beep back into the SD1.

With the focus indicator, I've never had a harder time focusing my SD14 with K or M42 mount lenses than I had with my Pentax K100D.

Thanks for the answer! I have never used a K100D. On Pentax K-x when I need to manually focus a lens I just quickly zoom to 6x-8x in LV and there it is - all done in seconds and with 100% focus assurance even at f/1.2. Also on Pentax you can always change the focusing screen if you don't have a LV. While not as exact as LV it is still better than a wild guess or a confirmation beep which might be some 2-5cm off unfortunately (at least with the K-x).

The whole reasoning behind my need to have a decent MF option is due to the fact that all my glass is manual and I don't have the resources to go for a good line up of AF primes.

....Another option will be to modify the SD1 to an EF mount - there I will have access to some cheaper AF glass while keeping the option to have M42 and K mount glass fitted (the K-mount will fit even better with exact infinity) and focused even better via an adaptor with an on-board focus confirmation chip, but the modification costs about $500 itself if one wants the EF AF to work.

Cheers!
