Here is my dilemma.. About 3 times a week i'm out watching/shooting my kids playing some type of sports. I have a large camera bag(backpack) that i normally take everything out of except my D7000 w/ 70-300vrii attached.

Did i mention my bag is large? I hate lugging it around but i also want someplace 'safe' to put my camera while i'm not using it.. Does anybody have a suggestion for a small bag (backpack, shoulder, sling) that fits just a camera and large lens.?

I have a feeling my wife is getting me a 70-200 f2.8 for my b-day (right sweety?). it would be nice if it fit that also.

I cant find anything... help?

I use a Crumpler 6M Home. The D700/70-200 just fits in on its side (with the hood reversed).. with room to spare for maybe one more lens.

I love Crumpler bags... but the online images are sometimes misleading. I've sent more Crumpler bags back then i've kept :(

Do you happen to have an image of the camera in the bag?

I wrote this review of the 7M Home which is just slightly larger on CamBags--but I sent all my Crumpler bags back too as they encouraged me to carry far too much gear. See Review 3 (the Green Crumpler) on this page:

I have a Domke F 5XB that I really like. It's heavy canvas and about 10 or 11 inches long, 4 or 5 inches deep, and 6 or so inches tall with a large foldover flap that keeps everything safely inside. With primes, I can have one short lens on the body plus another in the bag.

I would highly recommend the Vanguard Uprise 33. It's a professional looking, high quality bag. One feature that should really appeal to you is the expandable zipper that allows more (or less) room as you need. Here is a great review of the bag:

I bought this bag about a year ago and it is almost perfect for my needs. I travel alot for work and I always take my camera, a few lens, and work laptop in this bag. My gear that I usually pack in the bag is: d90, 70-200VRII, Tokina 11-16, 50 1.4, sb600, and Dell 15". I also have the kit 18-105 but usually dont take it if I have the gear listed above.

There are several pockets for batteries, filters, cards, etc. Although I have packed the d90 with 70-200 mounted and in the vertical position, it seems more natural unmounted. Other than that slight, slight inconvenience the bag is a 10++ for me.

I use this expanded to carry my D7K with the 70-300 attached, or contracted when the 16-85 is attached. Got it years ago to carry my old D90, and have been very happy with it.

If its just the camera and lens, I would look at the Kata H14. I use a Kata H12 for my D90 + it will handle a smaller zoom.

The bag isn't "stylish" but it will protect the equipment and does have the ability to carry just a bit more in the side pockets.

BTW the link provided shows this massive sling when "in use" - that is not standard equipment.

The sling is not overly massive, and it is rather hard to find. I recently sold my H14 on eBay but I am still offering the sling if anyone is interested! It's very flat and form fitting. I was not too keen on the combo--but possibly because my gear is bulky and very heavy and it make the H14 hang away from the sling.

I use a Think Tank Digital Holster 40, which fits a D3s with 70-200mm w/o hood attached, when extended. If I use the camera with a shorter lens there is no need to extend the holster. It's a tight fit, but that's exactly what I want. Camera with lens attached, nothing else.

I use my Mountain Smith lumbar pack for my D700 + 80-200AFS or 70-300VR.

You can buy a photo insert for it with configurable conpartments. I has a strap for over the shoulder or you can use the waist belt as well.

See: http://www.mountainsmith.com/products.asp?productId=295&categoryId=42&subCategoryId=0&subCategory2Id=0

and for the insert:

Love mine - it's the only camera bag I use.
