Olympus ib Software, watch out for this

When I bought my E5 I carlessly installed something called Olympus ib from the software disk that came with the camera. Now, when I try to open a photo from the SD card into Photoshop this "ib" opens first and is a devil to try to shut down. It is going to insist on loading every file on the disk before you can do anything like shut it down. When I tried to uninstall it in Win 7 it won't go away. It just starts to uninstall and then just gives you one of those famous meaningless error messages telling you an error has been found so the uninstall has stopped. I seem to be stuck with this piece of junk for the rest of my life. Oly makes good cameras but their software stinks.

If you can't uninstall it you can disable it from the start-up menu.

Click on the start button and type 'system' in the 'search program and files box'. 'System Configuration' should come up. Click on that and then click on the 'startup' tab. Scroll down to Olympus ib and uncheck the box. Ok it, you may then have to restart your computer to get it applied. ib shouldn't bother you again!

This is one of the most useful things I've learned to do on my pc. There's all sorts of rubbish that starts when you boot up your computer, especially when you've a lot of programs installed. Disabling the ones you don't really need can really speed things up (and get rid of other annoyances). And you can always start them normally if you actually need to use them!

Hope that helps.

I tried your advice. I unchecked it but it still booted directly to the "ib" program when I inserted the SD card in the slot on my computer. The only difference now is that it doesn't appear to be seeing the photos so it doesn't load them all. It says there are no new images so they don't all load and I can exit it faster. It is still a nuisance and Olympus should be ashamed of themselves. I have the latest 64 bit version of Windows 7.

Marvin, if your installation of the annoying software has been within the period that your computer saves restore points you should be able to pick a restore point that will get rid of "ib". Of course, any other software that you really want to have that was installed after the selected restore point will need to be installed. I've done this lots of times and it has really saved me a ton of grief.

Let it open. Once in, there's an option in it's settings about autostarting when a camera is detected. Just untick.

I can't be more precise, I haven't run it for months..

Run--> "services.msc" (without quotes)

Scroll down until you find the process associated with the ib software, right click--> properties. Choose start-up type as "manual" (if you ever will use the ib software) or choose "disabled". If you choose manual, then when you physically click the ib software it will launch. If you choose "disabled," you will have to go to "services.msc" again and change it back to "automatic" or "manual" before it will ever launch again, whether you click on it or not.

BTW, don't do this to other processes unless you know what the effect will be.

Cheers,

That will only fix the start on boot up problem.

The second problem is AUTOPLAY, which launches the iB program every time a card is inserted. This should be easy to disable with a bit of google search (I am not familiar with windows 7 as I use XP, but it should be similar).

Long story short:
  • Disable the automatic start on boot up
  • Change AUTOPLAY so it doesn't start the iB program when a card is inserted.

Some good advice already posted, but also consider getting a better uninstaller than comes with Windows. I use YourUninstaller.

If all good advice does not help, there is a simple solution.

Go to C-program files x86- Olympus- IB- open map and remove the IB .exe. Or rename trough removing only the last e of exe. The program wil not start ever. A rigorous way is to remove the complete IB map. After all make a registerclean with Ccleaner.

That was also my recommendation.
You can also do a search on the whole C: drive if you cannot locate that exe.

If you still cannot locate it, open the task manager after the progeam pops up and try to find the real .exe name.
For deleting you may have to delete as administrator.

i am aslo sometimes removing sth the rigorous way.
After all make a registerclean with Ccleaner.
Yes, but it works also without cleaning the reg.

Mr.NoFlash

I am highly invested in m4/3 without having a single m4/3 product, because 3/4 of my lenses and all my flashes work perfect on m4/3

I appreciate all the suggestions. I'm not sure what I did but it has stopped automatically starting at least. I still can't remove it from the hard drive but at least it doesn't force it's way on when I plug in an SD card. Obviously you need to be a computer expert to be a photographer these days. My computer expertise consists of expecting the software manufacturers to be capable and produce software that does what you expect it to do. Obviously, if that fails I have problems. Again, thanks for all your help.

I've had (and still have) the same problem from doing the SAME THING so I'm dimly hoping one of these methods suggested will work to extricate Olympussy's "ib" bug from my PC. In one previous, crude attempt to 'gouge' it out of my programs folder-it only replacated itself so now I have TWO versions of it permanently implanted there instead of the original ONE :(

The ERROR message that I get preventing it's removal says that a certain "PRODUCT DEFINITION FILE" is missing !! (Ya can't remove what you can't "define" hahaha!)

INTERESTINGLY, on a previous, most exhaustive web search, I found a discussion FORUM IN GERMAN that seems to describe the "OLYMPUS ib" as A TROJAN HORSE and offers a rather long paragraph of code and a series of related steps (to copy and paste) as THE WAY to 'remove' it from your hard drives !

I'm wanting to demand that OLYMPUS pay to remove this malware from my PC (or at least provide the "missing product def. file" - if that's really what the "problem" is?)

FINALLY, the really crappy part is that I NEVER BOUGHT THE CAMERA ANYWAY! I found the little gadget way too complicated / INCONVENIENT to operate and simply RETURNED it to Wmart.

But I get to "keep" the TROJAN as a permanent "souvenir" of my FIRST OLYMPUS "EXPERIENCE" !!! :(
