After reading lots of great posts here (thanks WP), I decided to buy the s820 (I was considering the i850 as well).

I went to Ebay and there are TONS for sale there, but I kept losing bid after bid. The descriptions were all the same, NEW, IN BOX, NEVER OPENED, s820 MG printers.

The "winning" bidders were paying $145, $150, $165 for these printers.

Finally, I got smart, looked up s820 MG, discovered it's a model made to colormatch the Dell computers, and immediately went to the Dell site to see what I could see.

Guess what? You can buy a brand new s820 for $180, FREE shipping (sellers on Ebay were $20-$29 for shipping) MINUS a $50 rebate, which you cannot use if you buy from Ebay, or any other unauthorized Canon dealer for that matter (like Sam's probably). total $130 shipped. And Dell does not mess around when it comes to getting ordered products out the door. Printer ordered last Thursday (late), delivered today (Tues).

So, for all you looking for a great deal on the s820, I doubt this can be beat. (and believe me I tried)

On a side note, many people are saying that buy.com is the best place to buy photo paper and ink cartridges, but I am not so sure. I looked online in MANY places to find the cheapest...and your local Best Buy has both the ink AND the paper for MAYBE $1 more (when you factor in shipping from online dealer) than what you can buy it for online. $2 max. for that difference, why would you order it? Maybe I am missing something.

Thats a good deal on the printer......Buy.com has the same deal but they want $188.00. You beat them by 8 bucks.....they do have free shipping and no sales tax at Buy.com. As long as you got the no sales tax you came out smellin like a rose!!

I just posted on my thread "not a pro" regarding this.

I ordered it directly from Canon. They have it listed as $199.99 and are offerring the $50 mail in rebate. I agree this is a great deal.

Kind of off your topic, but what made you chose the s820 over the i850? I am trying to decide between the same two printers myself?

Two reasons:

1. I came across 2 (maybe 3) different places on the net that claimed that the overall photo quality of the 820 was better than the i850.

2. 6 cartridges vs 4 cartridges

The reason I was seriously considering the i850 is because it's a brand new model, it's faster, and it has gotten great reviews so far. Also, someone claimed that the mediocre handling of b&w photos on the s820/900 has been improved in the i850 (and I like printing in b&w)

I guess in the end, I could not beat the cost of $130 shipped for the s820, as well as the logic of 6 cartridges as being more of a standard for photo printers.

Since I already have an HP printer that does fine with text, I don't care at all about the text output of either one, so that was not even a factor.

When I was on the phone with Canon, I was told that the s820 is designed for photos only whereas the i850 will work well with text as well. Also mentioned was the 6 color system in the s820 not in the i850.

FYI I ordered the S820 from Canon but when I received the shipment there was no printer. So I called and was told it was on backorder.

So great I payed them for express shipping so I could have my printer by the weekend. They actually expressed the usb cord and a package of paper. Alot of good that did me.

They did refer me to a site where the printer was in stock and for less money. PROVANTAGE.com $175.45 and I can still send in for the $50 rebate.

I did that with Buy.com.....ordered the printer and it never shipped so I called them. They said....oh that is on back order. I cancelled my order and bought it locally.

I was suprised that the person taking the order didn't have access to their inventory to know it was not in stock. buy.com should also have that info at the time you place the order.

Provantage had the number actually in stock visable. Friday evening they had over 800 in stock.

Buy.com did say it was in stock when I ordered it. I have bought things from them before and they usually ship the same day as ordering. This never shipped so after three days I called them and they told me it was back ordered. I think there is a lag between the salesmen and the shipping area.

Check out the S820 at Staples. $200, wth $40 coupon and free shipping. After rebate for $110 + tax. This was listed on the forums a few days ago.

The day before Thanksgiving my local Staples had this printer for $199 BEFORE a $50 mail in rebate. Plus, they were giving a $30 gift card towards your next visit. Wow!!

The day after Thanksgiving I went in with their newspaper ad which knocked $25 off a $150 or more purchase until 10AM. I was hoping I could combine this with all the rebates. Guess what? The printer was now $249, the rebate sign was down and the rebate pads were all gone, and the $30 gift card sign was no longer there.

They weren't the only crooks open for business that day. I stopped by Circuit City, Best Buy, and Comp USA that same morning looking for deals on a printer and a digital camera. They were all very busy and had signs everywhere promoting their special holiday sales. Not one item in either the printer departments nor the digital camera departments was changed from two days before although numerous signs and salespeople were claiming their great special one time only deals. Circuit City had also removed their table offering a 10% discount on one item if you signed up for one of their credit cards. Equally missing was the sign in the camera department offering 10% off the total purchase of 4 or more camera accesories. I watched some poor elderly woman being talked into a Kodak 4900 ("you know how good Kodak is") and then the clerk harassed her to buy the docking unit and an overpriced warranty. The poor woman finally was forced to sign a paper staing that she did not want the warranty and understood she was on her own if something went wrong after 14 days of purchase. Total scammers.

Staples.com now has it for $199.00 and then there is $50 mail-in-rebate and $30 Gift Card Mail-In. Plus you can use $30 off $150 (or $40 off $200) coupon (you can find it on the net), which bring the total down to $110ish - $30 gift card and free shipping.
