Hi all,

A long time ago I had a wonderful piece of software called Iview for cataloging and managing images.

It worked flawlessly, never had problems with it and the program was quite popular as well due to it's stabile, fast and easy operation.

Then one day, Microsoft got it's eyes on it and they ruined it completely. It's worth a price how they done it. From the day Microsoft took it over and changed it into Expression Media it stopped working. not only me (I started to use mostly ACDSee Pro) but many others changed to other software, or used the combined functionality in for example Light Room or other image software.

Now Phase One to my surprise brought back 'Iview Media" and changed it into Media Pro 1. Haven;t used it, but I really hope it's the same 'Iview Media' as I know it.

Any one bought it, tried it out already?
Michel

I thought MS was where software went to die. They clearly didn't 'get it' when they had Expression Media - glad they turned it loose. Can't wait to try it.

Me too...but the time I installed Expression Media as an paid update...I had quite some woirk to get my collections in order again..after that I purchased ACDSee immediately. (I don't hate Microsoft but they should keep away from anything in relation to 'creativity') I will never ever purchase anything any more from them, even if it has the slightest relation with media management/editing etc)

So now for safety I wait till the first raving reviews of Iview..sorry I mean Media Pro and will purchase it for sure if it gets good reviews.

I'm ecstatic over this news. I'll likely grab it over the weekend if possible and give it a whirl. I still don't think there's anything faster for large libraries. Even v2 works well enough for me, though it annoyingly reverts to small previews, especially on big Canon 5D MkII files. I just need basic and fast cataloging and retrieval. Very happy if this works well.

Just curious about what the threshold is for a "large" library as you use the term?

Sorry for the lag. I was thinking of event photography where one can generate 10000 images in a weekend. For studio and personal needs, it's nothing like that, but its reassuring the databases won't konk out.

I've installed and started testing, but haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with it yet.

The good news:
  • it's still the same old IVMP look and feel, with fast and intuitive cataloging
  • the new, dark/neutral background makes for nice viewing
  • raw rendering for my old Canon 1Ds files is fast (Microsoft could never get this to work, which is why I never upgraded to Expression 2)
The bad news:
  • raw support is not as extensive as Lightroom/Camera raw (for example, doesn't handle my old Sony 828 files) - DNG conversion might solve this problem, but I haven't had a chance to test.
If PhaseOne's plan is eventually more integration with CaptureOne, this could be a winner. I love Lightroom's editing, but find MediaPro's organization much more intuitive.

Interesting.. if you read the MediaPro forums - your Pros are considered by most to be major Cons... The new dark interface UI makes things hard to read (highlight color shifts from grey to white for example instead of say.. light blue). Most folks are complaining this is just a rebadge at this point and this is still essentially the same product that MS destroyed... Perhaps down the road.. but so far, Phase One doesn't seem to have done much with the product... you would think they might merge this into Capture One as well instead of requiring 2 products for true RAW work....

Wow... 10,000 images in a weekend is a lot of photos.. how does one seriously go about reviewing and editing them as a single user? Surely, this is a team effort and I would think Photo Mechanic would be a more suitable software? Do you really keep all these images in a database for keeping? Its just a lot of images (and seems like a lot of work)... What about RAW processing... how long must that take??

I have been running the new version for 4 days now, and just on photos.
After some initial start up issues, I find it pretty decent.

I am running Win 7, 64 bit Pro with 12G ram. I don't see the issues that the Mac people see. It connects to Capture One 6 very well. There are a few quirks, and the occasional speed issue, but I like it so far.

I should have been more explicit in my question. My photo database currently manages just over 47,000 photos. Although performance is ok, I don't think there is a lot of headroom. I always am on the lookout for photo databases that people like at, say 100,000+, photos. Have you used Iview at that level?

Having used Iview and Expression Media for years now, I have been waiting for this update for a long time so for not so good. The catalogue size limits were a major pain in Expression media and I was forced to first split my catalogue in 2 and then i had to reduce all of the thumbnails to stay under the 1.8 gb limit (130,000+ images between the 2 catalogues). So I downloaded the demo to try it out first, the first thing I did was to upload my Birds Catalogue (65,000+ images) no problem with that all meta data and catalogue subsets were there. I then tried to increase the thumbnail size for better usability, no problem, catalogue was up to 3.8gb (seemed to be ok). Then when i tried to reopen it, gave a me a message saying it was repairing catalogue and only found 31,000 images. Then I noticed that it won't sort my images, regardless of catalogue size or how i import them. Then i tried a fresh catalogue importing from my Raw folders and it imports no problem but now won't save ( and still won't sort) So far not sure what to think. I really want this to work, but may try and reinstall and try again. i am runnning an I7 950 with 12 gb of ram so no issues there. Anyone else experiencing these issues.

I installed it yesterday on win xp machine... tried to import a single JPG... CRASH Kabom! No matter what image I throw at it... it crashes. The forums indicate this is a problem for many... I guess this is what Alpha testing is about because if I cannot import a single image.. this isn't ready for beta yet.

Hi Fuego,

I had that exact same experience with Expression Media...quite some time ago on XP.
i'm now using Windows7 let there be hope.... ;-)

On the Mac side, the coding is now Intel, no longer PPC. This means that it will work with Apple's next system that is rumored to drop PPC support. Otherwise, Media Pro v1.0 2011 == iView MediaPro 3.1.3 from 2007, with updated camera compatibility. And that is totally fine with me.

Ditto here. An upgrade to iVMP after all these years was all I've been waiting for.

Worked brilliantly the first run through. Extremely happy. Next restart though was a total non-event. As in it won't start at all. It simply won't launch. Not even bounce in the dock. No crash report window either as it doesn't even get that far. It's dead.

Appears to be a bug based on attempting to access previous version preferences/files. That's something that should have been tested for so this version appears to still be a beta and shouldn't have gone to gold master in its current state. A version 1.1 release fixing these sorts of bugs should make this a must-have app, eventually, depends how quickly they can do it. Next week, next month, just not right now at this instant.

Same no start with me.

I contacted Phase One and their reply suggested removal of preference files but alas that did not work.

I notified them again of the failure of their solution, please do the same as I expect the likelihood of a fix might come sooner if the problem appears to be widespread.

for all those who are having problems - are you also running the newest Capture One 6?

I am, and as I browse the Phase One boards, I get the impression that many of those who have problems are not using C1, or are running XP, or a MAC.

I have both Win 7 64bit and C1 v6.

I have not installed C1 or Media Pro on my smaller XP laptop.
I know the C1 is not stable yet on an XP system.

I'm trialing Media Pro, just got C1 a few weeks ago.

I've got 50,000 images that need sorting and having built my catalogs in a couple of sessions of 2 hours max I'm happy with the speed of the program.

I like the interface, have only trialed Expression Media 2 for a couple of weeks, so I've not really any sense of how much is diffrent between the previous version and Media Pro..

I think this is a keeper.

Fast on an older

Elegant interface

Good intergration with C1 6.2

fair price in my opinion.

I've been waiting on getting down to business with sorting through my images for the right tool. This program is going to help me with this for sure..
