Trains & more Trains!!!! (pic link)

Great pix! I like the first one and the next-to-last one best. The first one has a beautiful light on it, and the composition is excellent, while the one of the switch and plant has a very pleasing overall look to it.

Keep shooting,
Paul.

Thanks Paul.

I liked the one with the flower and the switch as well.

My only regret is that I lost most of the things that made the picture pleasing (i.e. detail) when I reduced it in size for posting.

Nice shots, buddy. The first one is my favorite. I love the warm colors of the train wheels. But all of them are quite lovely. Great job and thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks buddy,

Believe or not, you photographs have been a large inspiration to me.

I think others would agree that you inspire a lot of people on this forum to shoot better pictures.

;)

I'll get on that Tom. I have been shooting some interesting shots out there for some time.
In fact, here's one I took with my D60.
Enjoy,

Ayrow

PS Tom , you wouldn't live in Indiana and Coach basketball by any chance, would you?

Ayrow,

Enjoyed your images.

Love to see some images of the ships in Norfolk harbor!

One of the most over-looked photographic technique is "numbers." That is to say, we have to take a "good" number of shots in order to get a few good photographs and you have one photo here that you presented that is OK to Good.

The sixth shot is the only one "good" here, in my opinion. The rest of the pics wasted download time for me, but I guess I had to go through it in order to see the sixth one.

The sixth picture works because of the strong geometry the tracks reveal in a train yard. Nice work to emphasis the tracks.

The others are not worth mentioning.
Spent part of the day at the Norfolk & Southern Trainyard.

Let me know what you think.

Ouch, SongMi!

A little harsh, but I can take it.
wipes sweat from brow

I will bite my tongue and smile and say thank you for the criticism.

Hi Ayrow. Every one has their opinions, but I completely disagree.Until I see some shots from Song Mi himself where we can critique them as well, his opinions I take with a grain of salt. I really like your train shots, especially the B&W ones. What method did you use for them? I really like your black and white tone.

Thanks Ron,

I did some research into most of SongMi's posts and he seems to be overly critical (and negatively rude) about 90% of what he has to say about other people's pictures.
I would very much be anxious to see what he is able to produce.

We could all learn a lot from him and his posts, appaerantly, since we all are only capable of producing mediorcre material that only looks good on cereal boxes.

Anyway, I took most of the B&W photos in color and then changed (lowered) the saturation to match B&W. This helps in retaining a softness in B&W mode.

For more contrasty images with geometric shapes involved, I simply converted the image to Grey Scale.

All of my editing is done using Paint Shop Pro - which I favor over PS.

Keep up the good work buddy,

Ayrow

I very much enjoy your work as well.
Technique?? A tripod and patience. ;)

In college courses (art and photo) I always look forward to art critique - perhaps just as exciting as the actual art in of itself.

A renown commentator defined ART as only that pertaining to the mind whereas CRAFT pertains to utility. For instance, a painting is art because its only usefulness is to be seen and contemplated. Photographs, however, can be useful for evidence or documentary - CRAFT. Simply, photography can either be ART or CRAFT; depending on INTENT.

Long story short, only one photo of yours (sixth pic) seemed more "art" to me because it caused me to pause and contemplate. The remaining photos were mere documentary of what you say and what it is that you saw.

I hope this helps. Probably not. For whatever its worth, my judgement of what is or is not ART is not based on my skills in photography or painting, rather, in the substance of what I'm judging. Perhaps my skills with the camera or the brush is better than you or perhaps not. ART does not care.

Well Songmi, since you seem to be such an expert on the subject and also seem to be more in touch with what everybody should be doing, I am sure I speak for the whole forum when I say I would love to see some of your photos, whether they be "craft" or "art."

Please, enlighten me, others, and yourself by posting us some expert examples of what you seem to be driving at everytime you critique on this forum.

Please. I'm dying to learn and be set straight.

I'm always curious when well-meaning people like yourself (& Tiski) miss-read my comments/critiques. You seem so defensive about your work when you should thank me for my candor. I dont marinate (sp?) your work with sweet words and to have you lead to think you're an accomplished photographer. Your ego wouldn't balance to reality.

Mind you, the mirror mirror on the wall tells not lies; just the same for my critique, although not humanly perfect.

...All I said was that you have never posted pics when people have requested them...True or false? I've seen your posts for a while.

I don't get offended on your comments. You bashed one of my pics saying why did I even push the shutter release or something to that...Did I rip you? No...I said difference of opinion. A few months ago I had it out with you and learned that there was no point.
