i cannot find anything in the manual on how to reduce the flash output by 1/3 2/3 1/2 stop output. this was indispensible on my oly p/s ,so i figure it must be there somewhere.

I have just tried adjusting the +or- EV option when shooting with flash in a variety of modes (P, iAuto, Superior iAuto and a couple of Scns) and it makes NO difference at all. EV is not adjustable in Manual mode although you can over/under expose with flash.

So, flash output is not adjustable; unless someone out there can prove otherwise!

I was looking through the CD that came with the camera and have yet to find flash compensation.

I have another but will get back if it works.

chris,i was going to try the EV adjust as well.thanks for doing the work.

maybe i am wrong, but this is a game changer for me and i will have to return the camera.i use fill flash all the time with my olympus (which also shoots raw,and its 6 years old) but i hate the look of flash, and this one WAY overexposes

Have to agree with you there - the flash is always +1 EV overexposed in my opinion, but I have learned to live with it as my flash photography is minimal.

Has anybody used the Superior Auto (orange icon on Mode dial) to take a flash photo? I realize you don't have too much control over your settings but I'm getting some fine indoor flash photos with the Superior Auto mode.

BTW I love everything about the HX9V except that it's a little too small for my hands but I'm waiting on the HX100 to eliminate that problem.

I would hope that EV works but the question is whether flash output can be adjusted up (assuming that headroom exists) or down - independently of overall image EV.

For me, that would be a deal-breaker. I'm glad the subject came up.
I am seeing a difference in the images taken with flash when I adjust the EV setting.

"- EV" is definitely a darker image.

I stand (sit) corrected! Have just taken a series of flash pics of a white wall ranging from +2 to -2 EV and there is a small difference between the two extremes, about 1/3rd EV by my estimation; certainly not 4!

I agree - I can't believe how bad the HX9V overexposes the flash, in any mode. The only remedy I can find is to make sure that face recognition is on and registers, otherwise the faces are horribly overexposed. I have never seen a camera this bad. Nothing to do either.

I had some decent shots too with Superior Auto, BUT I had a terrible problem with Red Eye! Every picture I took had lots of Red Eye problems. Red Eye was set to Auto.

I have since set Red Eye to On, and switched to P. I have not had a chance to try any indoor shoots since.

How is Red Eye for you all? This was worse than most of my previous cameras.
