as usual with a new camera, today i made a photo session test with the canon powershot sx220 around the ancient Rome

weather: sunny

time: around 17.00-18.00

camera settings: P mode, iso100, saturation +1, sharpness +1

here some shots, more are coming (original size available):

some more data:

during the photo session, with the original full charged battery i could take before it was completely discharged:
  • 246 shots all outside
  • around 15 minutes of full hd video 1920*1080@24fps@35mps (3.85gb of clips)
the experience was positive, the camera response was quite fast in every condition. I had none bad shot to delete due of the camera. The quality to my eyes looks pretty good and detailed especially at mid range focals.

in video mode the 2 speed zoom is turned to single speed (the lowest) when recording starts. I am quite sure it is so because the faster it's also louder.

Very nice captures! lots of details there.. I like the last one most. but the photos are all in 1600x1200, where can I download the original (larger) ones for a closer peep?

I didn't reallize that the camera zoom is 2-speed. Can you explain this in more detail? thanks.

Wonderful shots! Thank you for sharing. I am still surprised with how good images can be straight out of this camera. I shouldn't be. It is a great compact travel zoom.

Nice captures. :) The IQ itself isn't great, but for a CMOS-based camera, the pics look pretty good. How's the video?

the zoom has 2 speeds, fast and slow depending on how far you deflect the zoom lever, making it easier to compose the image without overshooting the desired focal length. It takes about 6 seconds to zoom the entire range at slow speed, and less than 3 second at high speed.

the original size shots are availble on my gallery (just click on my nickname)

i am working on it, i will post on youtube soon :)

I think overall the IQ is as good as 14x zooms of this camera size body get, regardless of sensor technology.

One could take any one specific topic, say CA by itself as an arbitrary point of concern, and argue that some other cam with the same zoom and body size is arguably better, but then that same cam may be inferior in , say, chroma noise at ISO 800 , so who is to say which is the more important issue? It's personal taste.

In what is currently the only comparitive review of other similar cameras by a professional camera review site, dcresource.com , the Canon was described as having the best overall IQ of the three they reviewed:

"Ultimately, the camera that's best for you depends on your needs. If photo quality is more important than camera performance, then I'd go with the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS."

Thanks for the pics, Leonardo.

I'm unable to watch the 1080p full screen in either Firefox or IE7, but I guess that has nothing to do with you, of course, and it is a problem on my end. Anyone know how to fix that? I've followed all sorts of suggestions and have the latest Adobe Flash, and such, but still no luck. This seems to be a "known" issue [Windows7 Home Premium 64bit] but if anyone here knows a workaround, please speak up! :)

The videos on the initial small window look great and when I attempt to go fullscreen and only get a frozen static image, with the audio working, I can say the full 1080p looks spectacular [ just wish I could see it in motion :( ]

Was your wind cut filter turned on? Wind noise wasn't terrible but was present in some shots, so I thought I'd ask.

The zoom motor noise was kept at bay thanks to the masking of the other ambient noise (traffic in your case) I notice. I think Canon has done an admirable job of suppressing it in general, even in quiet rooms without the benefits of masking, though.

I notice a transitional fade being used between some shots so I assume you've applied some post processing, yes?

i dont know what's wrong there, here is playing fine (vista64)

nope, wind filter was off

yes the fading was the only post processing work, i made with Adobe Premiere. Then i exported the media "as source".
Tonight i will upload also on vimeo because of less compression than youtube.

Rome! I can´t wait for being there again! Great city!

I had just received my SX230HS and have to agree with you: what such a nice camera! I´m playing in M mode and I´m surprised with the image quality! I´ll try some shots of airplanes today.

Some test shots using P mode and natural color setting:

3000x4000, ISO 100, F/3.1, 1/125s, flash on, 5mm

3000x4000, ISO 100, f/3.1, 1/125, flash off, 5mm

3000x4000, ISO 100, f/3.1, 1/13s, flash off, 5mm
