For all the 'pros' in this forum: we are in the market for a digical camera. I have spent the last 7 hours reading through this discussion list, multi reviews in so many places my head spins and far from reaching a conclusion I am more confused that ever!

We have never owned a DC and need one that is versatile and reliable.

My partner is a mixed media artist and wants to take close ups of everything. However - we need pictures of scenery for a new website - and so we are very much in the market for a zoom or ultra zoom.

Right now I am torn between:

C-730 - but worried about the 'tapping'.
C - 4000 - is being plastic a problem?
C - 4040Z or 5050 - too 'big'?
Canon G2

So far I like the C-4000 but there is alot of pressure to go with the C-730.

Can you help?

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your time. I meant too big in terms of being more than we really required. We want as many megapixels as we can afford. But also want zoom capability. I guess value for money is the bottem line and the jury is still our as regards the C-730.

Can you tell me if the lens not being threaded is a problem for you in terms of filters or other lens?

I'm not up on all the newer cams but with what you have in mind, "I'd" be lookin at the Minolta d7hi or the Sony 717... Both are high megapixel, medium high zoom with threaded large diameter lenses for quality additional lenses easily added to both for macro or telephoto. Unfortunately with those two additions, a tripod or at least monopod will probably be required unless you're extremely steady handed. The c730uz would be a distant 4th choice for me. All of these models are major improvements of thier previous models.... I'd probably opt for the e10/20 3rd but that is a hybrid with a bit more expense involved for accessories yet nowhere near as invlolved physically or monetarily as a true DSLR such as the Canon D-30/60 or Nikon D-100.

This is all my oppinion based on very little in-depth research as a Spoiled, 10x, Image Stabilized, Low Megapixel c2100uz/e100rs user who's currently happy with his present situation....LOL

Me & My UZI, Strollin Down The Avenue. Me & My UZI, Focusin On Somethin New. To 'UZe' Or Not To 'UZe'? That 'IS' The Question. c2100uz/e100rs (in that order) & a B-300 & C-210 (in that order)

Too often folks are looking for a camera that does all. They make a decision because a camera does or does not do a small number of things. Yet these "things" end up not being the main things the person uses from day to day.

Make a list of your needs...rate them 1-5 with 5 being the most important.

Indoor
  • flash
  • low light
Outdoor
  • landscapes - distant or close
  • buildings or trees
  • sky or no
  • sunset or moon
  • day or night
People
  • crowd
  • close but more snapshot
  • portrait
  • indoor or outdoors
Animals
  • wildlife
  • close up
  • in motion
  • macro
Still life
  • flowers
  • furniture
  • things - jewelry, glassware
See what I mean?

Then...what about printing/publishing?

Web
Print - > 8x10
Magazine, newspaper etc?

Post processing...who will do it? you or a store?

Once you have this list in hand then start comparing...

RichO,

This is great advice! I am often asked which computer to buy? I usually answer with the same kind of questions that you have raised. The perfect computer really depends on what software you want to run and what tasks you are likely to want to accomplish. All too often, the computer is poorly matched for the tasks at hand! And certainly this is even more true for digital cameras.

Good advice.

If your choices are C-4000 or C-730, I'd choose the C-4000 most bang for your buck! Great Super Macro! Great manual control and one of the best lenses!

I have this camera and I use a tube adapter sometimes with a 2x telephoto lens.

Thanks for your feedback. From what I have read about the UZI - we have missed out on a great camera!

Thanks so much for your suggestions! We did just that and I think we have come up with the right camera for us. Not an Oly unfortunately but we decided on something that we thought would serve us well now and seems versatile. It was really hard to chose.
