hey, has anyone come acroos a backpack that can store a 17.5" laptop? Usually it's only for the 15.5" I'm taking a 3 month trip and planing on taking the 17.5 laptop for retouching, etc. at night when I'm not doing anything.
Thanks.

I have a Caribee College 40, similar to this

http://theluggageprofessionals.com.au/backpacks/13/caribee-college-40-x-tend-backpack.html

I use it work and play and it easily fits a 17" laptop in a padded pocket. It is BIG and you can fit a heap of stuff in it, ie all camera gear and your computer + accessories, plus spare clothing for day/overnight trips etc..

Downside is that it's BIG and is heavy when loaded. It has good harness system but there is no cover for the harness, so it can get tangled with other things when not in use.

I'm guessing by your nick that you're also in Australia? If so go to a proper luggage store and try some on, but the online prices are heaps better...

Naneu Pro 217F Sahara
Kata Pro-Light Bumblebee-220 PL Backpack
PROMASTER Adventure Series Pack (maybe)

I've been searching as well but I had the additional restriction of under $200 and tripod holder so there may be others for instance the ThinkTank Airport TakeOff™ Rolling Camera Bag or the Naneu Pro™U-220-N

I have the LowePro CompuRover AW that holds my camera gear in the bottom compartment, miscellaneous gear in the top (jacket, lunch, cables, etc.) and my 17" laptop easily fits in the large back compartment. Very comfortable bag even when heavily loaded. Has the all-weather cover which comes in a bit handy here in Oregon. Great bag!

Thanks guyz for the info. Yep, I'm in Australia. Can these bags be carriedon board the plane and not checked into the baggage compartment?

Ok, evidently no one else here has ever been on a vacation.

Don't edit photos at night. Get out. See the place you're visiting. Sit on the editing for when you get back.

If you spend your nights editing photos you took in the day, you will never fully know the place that you're visiting. If you're even suggesting that you would do so, I have to assume that you do not even fully know the place where you are.

Leave your laptop at home. Buy a couple 16-32 gb cards. Take great pictures.

My first reaction was: mind your own business, but I would never write that down.
Seriously: we took a netbook for the first time and it is great fun.
We made a backup and could see the photos already much bigger.
We rapidly deleted some rubbish (for example 9 of the 10 when using 10 fps).
We selected 5-10 photos/day and uploaded them for the family.
Everybody liked it.
The real editing is indeed for later.

I've been using the Black Wolf Monashee (40L) for the past year or so and have been very happy with it.

Really good travel bag...I've lost count of how many flights I've taken it on. Small enough to be taken as hand luggage, and big enough to use as a standalone for short trips. Has heaps of practical compartments, good compression straps, a comfortable harness (well for me anyway) and is fairly waterproof.

The laptop sleeve is a stretchy neoprene-like material and I have no trouble fitting a 17" widescreen ASUS, so you should be able to fit yours too.

Downside it that it doesn't really have any good foam-padded compartments for carrying camera gear, so I have to carry my camera in its padded case which I then put inside the main compartment of the bag.

Unfortunately airlines have different rules about hand baggage but some of the "low price" airlines have really strict rules about dimensions, for example 55x40x20 cm and max. 8 kg.

17.5" is probably min 3.5 kg so that does not leave much room for camera and lense.

Check the Targus line. You didn't indicate you wanted to store photo gear; the Targus units have a limited lifetime warranty (i.e. anything wears out, they'll replace it) and usually have carriers with fixed or retractable wheels - great for most circumstances, as you don't want to be load more on your body than you have to - and extensible handles mean you can hang other things off it. Enjoy your trip!
