If we believe Olympus newest statement, there will be an E-50.

Even if I own an E-5 I will buy the E-50, because it will be smaller, lighter, cheaper. It will be a perfect body to put my Leica on and go shoot. The E-5 is great but for many situations is big and heavy, and I often leave it at home.

E-50 will not come out until Olympus acquires new chip either from Panasonic or new source, some say it may be Kodak.

Is there any new chip on the horizon besides the 16MP Panasonic?

"Some" have been saying Kodak since Olympus started using Panasonic sensors..... I dont think its likely.

Unless Olympus is contractually bound to buy sensors from Panasonic, there are LOTS of sensors available..

The Sony sensors used in the latest Nikons and Pentax DSLRs demonstrate just how good a sensor smaller than 35mm frame can be. Sony sensors in the Nikons and Pentax cameras seem to be beating the crap out of Panasonic sensors for low noise (Im sure firmware has SOMETHING to do with it, as Sony doesnt seem to be getting the same results with their own sensors).

Whether or not a sensor sized/shaped for 4/3 could be bought from Sony is another question altogether.

Im not unhappy about the Panasonic sensors (as used in the E-620/E-5).

I think Olympus needs to fix FOCUS ISSUES in low-light as they exist in the 620. A new chip/more megapixels wont help in that regard..

As far as high ISO goes, I think the 620 and E-5 dont do as badly as one would think from reading the forum. Better would be good, but not a deal breaker for me.

If they go the E-30 route, and make the camera bigger and heavier than it needs to be, and still dont make it weather-proof, I'll still "take a pass" on a new camera.

A 650 - probably, but its not going to happen. An E-50 - nope, even if it does happen.

What focus issues ? I have no focus issues with mine. It is a little slow in low light but this is not a low light sports camera. I shot an entire event with the E-620 and the Leica, all at f/1.4 , 1/40 , iso 1250 which I consider very low light. The focusing was slow but enough to get the pictures I wanted. They where also focused dead on where I wanted. At some points they turned all the light completly to serve the cake or other foods. For those times I put the FL50R to do AF Assist, but never triggered the flash. I was able to focus instantly in near darkness.

Where the E-620 gets painfully slow is when you activate all focus points, which I never do.

It depends on the specs and the grip and weight.

Explanation: I do have an E620 and I regret the buy. It's a very nice camera but the grip sucks, at least for me.

So if the E50 got specs upon the E5 in that time, it would be a very tempting idea and probably I would buy it as I don't need is't heavier big brother and the watersealing.

I love my 50mm but it is a tad slow at times so I think an updated SWD 50mm f2 with a macro switch on the side which can CDAF effectively would be brilliant.

As far as the next camera is concerned, I love the E600 I bought recently on ebay and with the battery grip it is a perfect size for me and I'm a 6ft (well, 5ft 11 and three quarters) ex rugby prop.

However, I would like to see a movie mode and a AF assist light on it (and weather proofing). This would make it a perfect camera for me.

Nethertheless I don't think olympus will ever produce that camera as unlike APS cameras there is no upgrade path to a larger sensor size so they handicap their cameras a little so people who have an e620 will covert an E5.

I think this is flawed marketing.

They should produce the best camera possible, in similar design to the original OM1 (and the new Pen cameras) and use the option of no viewfinder or optical viewfinder as their way to differentiate between models.

I'm waiting for an upgrade from my E510 and E620 and E30 weren't "enough" for me (especially the low ISO noise part). I've been playing with the idea of switching but I'm not THAT limited by my camera to decide a brand change.

So an E50 with the same E5 IQ would be more than enough for me. I would have prefered Olympus keeping the 510 shape and bulk (which fits perfect in my hands) but....

We can even dream of a panasonic GH2 sensor with Olympus JPEG and I'd be signing right now :D.

I'd want an in-body AF beam, like on the E-1 — and many competitor's cameras. I often shoot in dim light with radio-slaved flash and even the E-5 struggles to AF... where the E-1 does not.

I'd also want the Live View AF to be as quick and effective as the E-330's is (in good light. The E-330 AF is also horrid in dim light.)

Without those, I don't think I'd bother.

I present own E510 and E300 and will eventually be forced to replace as they age. An E50 if it is produced would most welcome.

I am sure I would not be comfortable using my Zuiko 14-54mm, 70-200mm, 35mm, 9-18mm four thirds lenses on a m4/3 body not to mention my three OM Zuiko manual lenses.

Even if it wouldn't be smaller or lighter than the E-30, which I own and which I still find to be quite on the large and heavy side for a camera with a sensor the size of 110 or "pocket" type film.

For me, though, the E-30 is still the best E-System camera around, because I would not want to carry the even heavier E-5.

But I do miss an up-to-date sensor as well as I do miss video capabilities.

The E-620, which I did own alongside the E-30 for one and a half year, on the other hand is a fine camera, too, but has too many small disadvantages for me, which made me finally sell it a couple of weeks ago: shutter, finder, AF, speed, handling and ergonomics are all slightly less good, which made me prefer the E-30 most of the time when I had to choose which camera to take with me, even if I would have wanted the set to carry rather light and small.

All in all, though, I'm getting more and more reluctant to invest more money in a system that, for me, is still lacking essential lenses (like fast wide-angle primes and telephoto lenses around 300mm f/4 or 400 mm f/5.6).

If there'd be a presentation of one or two new FT lenses alongside the E-50, if and when it comes, though... oh, well...

Cheers,
Robert

In a "Banquet Hall" lit properly for dining, Both of my E-620 cameras are demonstrably slower to focus than my E-300/500/510/520. (all on center single point focus) with or without the focus assist of the FL-## flashes.

It is the ONLY complaint I have with the 620, but it is a real, and valid problem.

If it is smaller and lighter than the E-5

5xx size would be ideal, but they probably wouldn't make it any smaller than the E-30

If it at lest matches the IQ of the 5 and costs less.

If I have any money in the bank when it comes out (think this is the year to replace the roof) Might have to wait for the recons to hit the market

E-620 sized body??? If I wanted a 620 sized body, I'd have bought a 620 (actually, if they put a decent grip on it, and stuffed in a BLM-5, I could live w the result)
