First, sorry for posting in this forum, I think there should be one forum devoted only to traveling and photo opportunities, but as there is none and I will be using Canon I am asking here. I will be in Slovenia and Croatia in middle of May for about 3 days. I will travel by car and I am flexible. Just want to ask someone who lives/been there, what is worth seeing there. So far I only come across is Plitvice Lakes National Park. Any suggestions and ideas what to see there is appreciated.

Limiting yourself to 3 days will be tough...Didn't spend much time in Slovenia (drove through from Austria), but it did take me 3 hrs or so to get through there due to the road congestion.

As for Croatia, assuming you're coming down from Zagreb, you can do a loop such as: Zagreb, Plitvice, Senj, Krk (definitely for the wine/scenery), then head back to Zagreb via Rijeka. The Senj-> Krk route is coastal so there are various towns along the way for photo ops. Up to you where to stay in between, but I'd want at least a full day (if not more) to see all of Krk. I don't remember the travel time between Plitvice and Krk (via the coastal route above), but I'd guess around 3-4 hrs.

Good Luck in your planning!

Hi there:

I was in Piran, Slovenia last year for a conference and found plenty of things to photograph. The town is beautiful, and has a very old wall / fortification that you can gain access to. Slovenia has some pretty cool caves and castles that are worth a look. I found it a pretty awesome place to visit, with very nice people.

We thoroughly enjoyed 3 days in Slovenia last August.

After driving across Europe from the UK, we stayed on the shores of Lake Bohinj, used the cable car to explore the Vogel ski area, explored the lake and surrounding villages, & finally, drove to the caves at Postojna and the nearby castle at Predjama. Lots of touristy photos - Canon 50D!

We found the roads and motorways/autobahns generally free flowing. (Some road signs are in English as well as Slovenian.) Wished we'd had more time there to see the Adriatic coast and the capital.

Sorry, haven't been to Croatia for decades.

you hit my weak spot... I'm not Slovenian myself but absolutely love this precious little country. haven't yet seen enough, but my to do list would be:

pure landscapes:
1. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj
2. Velika Planina
3. Logarska Dolina
4. Ormoska Vinska Turisticna Cesta
5. Dolina Krke
6. Vipavska Dolina

cities/villages:
1. Skofja Loka
2. Ljubljana
3. Piran
4. Maribor

see: http://adriatic2alps.com/ and http://www.slovenia.info/ for more info and enjoy your stay...

I'm from Slovenia and if you want any concrete informations ... just ask.

On my blog (or maybe http://picasaweb.google.com/kacnje ), you can find many photos from Slovenia. It is beautiful country and you shouldn't miss this.
Regrettably I've only ever been to Slovenia on business and then only Ljubljana. I've always wanted to go back with my family and stay with a friend over there - he's told me about the regions beyond the cities and I can see what he means by your pictures.

Especially like the one titled Razno.

Just want to say thank you to all who helped me with my trip. I really appreciated all advices and used most of them during my vacation. Here is what I did:

Took a sleeping car on a night train from Warsaw to Vienna. Rent a car in Vienna and went to Postojna Caves. Spend there most of the afternoon and drive from there to Plitvice. Get there about 11 p.m. and started early next morning. Left from there about 5 p.m. and drove to Opatija, beautiful town on Adriatic coast. Next day we stop in the morning at Bled, Ljubljana and back to Vienna for the night train to Warsaw. All in all, it was great trip, way to short and expensive, but definitely worth it. Thanks again about all help I get here. Hope you enjoy the few pictures selected from over 700 I took.
