Some guy pops up today with 7 D3X body's brand new. $6999 which is a $1000 less than retail and he'll even let you make an offer so he'll take less. He's also shipping free in a FLAT RATE MAIL BOX. Do you know

Signs that it's fraud?

1. Price
2. Amount. No one has these let alone 7 and that low of a price.
3. Ship date is MID MAY (gives him time for the getaway)
4. Know anyone that ships an $8000 item in a Pri Mail Flat Rate box?

Amazing thing is is he has all but 1 sold!!! Either I'm missing on a great deal or these people buying are fools.

Most D3X users in Nigeria have 7 bodies, I think it's totally scam free...Can be wrong of course.

E-Bay is absolutely full of fraudsters. Seller, and buyer, beware.

I listed a D300 on eBay only three weeks ago, and guess what? Sold for the BIN price (GBP 650) in approximately seven minutes!! Wow! How lucky was I?!!

EXCEPT......... I know enough about eBay to smell a scam from a mile away. The buyer in this case had zero history, a Nigerian sounding name (why is it ALWAYS Nigerians??????) and had only signed up to eBay that very day. HMMM. So, I did the correct thing, and sent the invoice. Guess What? In only five minutes, I had an email outside of eBay stating that the link to my paypal wasn't working, and could I provide bank details? I think not.

Sadly, when I got through to eBay customer support (that in itself is a joke) to report this attempted fraud, they actually took the guy's side, and said that we all have to start on eBay somewhere. I told the girl that I hadn't come down with the last fall of snow. We forwarded all of the correspondence to eBay, and in fairness had a response inside 24 hours apologising and telling us that it was indeed a fraud (surprise!!) and that the user had been banned. (Big deal.)

I thankfully know how to spot these things, and was never in danger of getting caught. Many unfortunately are not so lucky and get double ripped off - no money and no product when they eagerly send it off. Don't be one of them.

I also had my D300 listed on Amazon Marketplace, and sold it quite happily, for a decent and fair price, only 24 hours after the attempted eBay scam. I tend to prefer Amazon all ends up for this sort of thing - it can take longer but is generally much safer.

It's not only on eBay either. Two months ago I put up my D5000 for sale on two local sites in Amsterdam, Holland: Marktplaats.nl and Fotoapparatuur.nl. I got at least 4 replies from fraudulent buyers. They wanted the item shipped to Nigeria. All had a **** and bull story--present for family, urgent needs and so on. Two were even from Germany. When pressed for advanced payment they faded away. Beware!

His trading history looks a bit funny,

2002 - 2003 - 2005 - 2006
With a few recent transaction not really camera likes.

Sometimes its this strange profiles that generates GEM deals on ebay for Leica oldies for example.

There are funny business going on, however to me, so long as its done over Paypal, its fairly secured. Ebay recently introduced buyer protection + shipping, so these protects us even more!

I have good news and better news. That price is realistic, if not real. When I bought last June, the MAP was $7137, and it still might be. I bought refurb for $6500. You should be able to get the $7137 price at a few major retail dealers. You might get a little lower.

Dealers who have these units may try to pump up the price, but if you put the cash on the table, it is difficult for them to refuse.

I'm saying that I'm pretty sure you can go to a reputable dealer and get it for $7137. That was the price in June 2010. I don't know what the minimum advertised price is, but the moment you call in, you can get the real price. And there is some room to bargain. Unless they are now scarce due to factory problems. But even then.
I haven't seen a dealer selling less than $7999 in a while. Even if price is correct there are another million red flags first of which is him having all those copies but not shipping until Mid May. In any even he sold them all..good luck to the buyers.

You might want to have the guy supply you the serial number, then call Nikon to confirm if this thing is new and covered under US warranty.

Ebay is in the decline phase because it made a choice to always side with the buyer. That is how they made feedback and rating useless. They have all these nifty programs for buyers, but in the process they screwed many legitimate sellers who eventually left. I used to find anything on ebay, because regular folks were able to sell their household/garage junk. Not anymore. Many sellers, I know went opening their own online stores, or Amazon.

Here is the truth to those who want to build their business around ebay. If you have 100% feedback, and great reputation with paypal, you are as likely being shutdown as the person with bad reputation. It happened to me.

Carlo,

As you know as most other Dutchies that Netherlands is known as a scam haven when it come to online selling and buying.

That's why you always have to sell and let them pick it up at your house or other place where it is save to make a deal...even than it's not completely save of course but it gives some kind of barrier between you and the lowest level of online scam rats.

I sold my D3 to a fellow photographer. I had earlier on many replies of people who wanted to buy it, many by the internet (marktplaats), all not trustworthy by the way they want to make the deal (not come by, no pre-payment etc etc) I join a well known photo forum in Netherlands, I sold it to one of the other participators. Might be I could get a bit more by the international e-bay or Marktplaats in Netherlands but not worth the risk.

My advice if you want to sell it online, join an online photo forum where you have to registrate sell it by there to one who has at least some posting history.

Might be he gambled before by buying a house with a mortgage he never can pay off...Even banks fall for that one...might be he can sell those D3X's to a bank? :-)

anyway it's a non issue on this forum, we're all pretty smart over here and would never be so incredible stupid to take a too high mortgage from a scam bank and especially not buying a reasonable expensive camera we haven't even touched before.....right?

Michel
he had a 100% yes but hadn't done a transaction in a few years and never camera gear. Could be a guy that needs to raise a quick $50K and is going for broke.

He wouldn't provide me with serial # nor even tell me how he acquired 7 copies. Told me that's confidential.
