F717 : No live histogram with 3:2 pictures

Because its not available in 3:2 mode..

Why?

I dunno.. maybe it would take up a much higher % of the screen in 3:2 mode vs full resolution mode

Its because the histogram taken from the whole ccd while 3:2 is a crop portion of the ccd. If something extremely dark or bright was in the cut off portion (top or bottom) it would still show up on the histogram and that would be misleading. The histogram is also not present when using the digital zoom for the same reason (digital zoom is just a cropped and enlarged center portion of the full image).

But, I'd still like to see a "live" histogram in Manual. I don't understand why you can't have it. Manual was my favorite mode with the 707. I've had to switch to AP and SP with the 717. Not that it's a big deal. I just don't understand the rationale.

john,

I was just going by the manual. Page 50. "The histogram also appears when the mode dial is set to Auto icon (not Auto P) or M, but you cannot adjust the exposure"

I'm not quite sure what that means? I took it to mean no "live" histogram. But, that doesn't seem to be right. But because of this I never used the histogram in Manual. But I will start today..lol

BTW, I'm not a 7X7 guru. More like a helpful old hippie with a few cameras.
Although I've never been normal :-( Tain't nothin wrong with abnormal ;-)

Well Steve,

You've been more than helpful on the forum and I'm glad you took my note in jest as it was intended.

If you set your camera to 3:2 you dont see the histogram but a
circle with a cross in it. Anybody know why ?
Internally, the stage at which the histo is produced needs the entire pixel map to make it work but the 3:2 image is masked with bands top and bottom for you to be able to see which portion of the shot will eventually be saved.

Apparently the histo generator is incompatible with the other image steps that are contemporary with that mode.

Moral to the story: If you want the live histo, forgo the in-camera frame-o.

Just because 100 pixel on top and buttom are missing its not possible to recalculate and show the actual histogram ? I have a hard time believing that.
