Is the D90 worth it at this point?

I got my D90 with an 18-55 lens for 750 here in Canada around christmas. Thats about 650 body only and brand new too

Just because the D90 is an older model now, mean that it is any worse than it was the day it came out. If high ISO performance is what deters you from buying a D90, then take a few minutes to compare shots taken at identical shutter speed/aperture/ISO/NR settings and you will see that the D7000 and D90 are nearly equal. What gives the D7000 the advantage is more megapixels. The D90 is excellent and will do pretty much anything you ask of it. Reasons to upgrade to D7000/D700 and upwards: if you need a very tanky body, 14-bit RAW, metering with AI lenses, more FPS for action, speedier autofocus in low light.

I'm not a "soothsayer" as to what is best buy or not, you have been using a D50? it has been a good entry camera, the current D90 is getting long in the tooth, I've had mine for about 18 months, I thought of maybe selling it and D200 and go for D7k, but I'm staying pat-- for now I don't feel my jump right now improves my situation that much for the money outlay, I think you should go for a D7k with a lens you can sell to bring the price in line with a D90 price, for me I'm going to hold till a D7100 or so, comes out then sell my D90, and D200 and move up.

Hope this and other responders help you find the right set up for your needs and pocket book.

Not that long ago, refurbed D90's were available at the Nikon outlet for $719.

Someplace called Gigabargain on Amazon has them for $725, but I'd check out that retailer and make sure they are factory refurbs before ordering.

Cameta also has demo/refurbs for $829 with 1 year warranty.

I've ordered a lot of Nikon refurbed stuff and never had a problem.

I have just upgraded my D50 to a D90. I also have a D300s and a D3 which I use for wildlife photography. I loved my D50 as a lightweight walkabout camera, but is was getting a bit long in the tooth.

I tried a D60, but found it too much of a step down, especialy in IQ. The D50 is very special, which is why I kept it that long.

I did look at getting a D7000 to replace both the D300s and the D50, but still prefer the D300s faster frame rate with grip and the 51 point focus area when shooting raptors in flight and the large cats. A good used D90 with 2200 actuations was on offer at 60% of retail so I took the plunge.

This weekend I tried it out a bit. What impresses is that it has the weight, size and handling of the D50 that I love but has the responsiveness of the D300s. The large LCD and AF is a dream. The IQ is very close if not identical to the D300s as well.

I would (and did not) buy a new D90 unless you can get a bargain, rather look for a good used one discarded by an early D7000 adopter.

By the way, the D90 kit 18-105VR lens works very well. Not sure whether I should sell it or my 18-70 yet.

"take a few minutes to compare shots taken at identical shutter speed/aperture/ISO/NR settings and you will see that the D7000 and D90 are nearly equal. "

Uh, no, the later camera is much better in low light, as every review out there has stated. Three years later and $400 more dollars does make for a better camera. I'm getting shots at 6400 that were simply not possible with the d90.

Owned the D90, liked it. Own the D7000, love it. What it should be compared to is the D700. It's close!
