I'm sure this has probably been talked about before but I've just got my D7000 and an 8GB SD card. The manual says at an average file size of 19.4 MB you can fit 223 14-bit RAW images on an 8GB card and sure enough that is what the counter says on my camera.

Is my math that bad because I bought an 8GB card thinking that I would get around 400 shots on it?

On my Olympus camera the RAW file size is average of 13.9MB and you can get about 576 shots on an 8GB card which equals 8006MB. So shouldn't that mean 412 14-bit RAW shots on an 8GB card on the D7000?

My 14 bit raw is pushing 23-24 mb each and the JPEGs (fine) are pushing 12-14 mb each. I record in both raw and JPEG which uses a lot more space per shot, but I use 2 cards, the smaller for the JPEGs and the larger for the raw. It matches my use of photos to view and send immediately versus process. It's just a multiplication game after that.

Yes but even at 24MB for each RAW shot you should be able to fit about 333 pictures on an 8GB card and a 24MB RAW and 14MB jpeg should give you around 210 shots.

I use a 32GB card, and I get 919 14-bit RAW files, according to the LCD screen.

That would make each image around 34MB which it isn't. You should be able to fit at least 1333 shots on a 32GB card. What Nikon tells us is that you can only fit 27 shots on each MB.

Anyway it is what it is, just that my 8GB is a little small, I've order a 16GB card as well thinking that these cards would cover me, so now I'm going to need another couple of 16GB cards or a 32GB card at least. I'm buying the Sandisk 45mb/s cards so they are not cheap, hopefully the faster cards will come out soon and these will drop in price.

I think (but I am not sure), that Nikon is overly conservative when calculating how many shots remain. The venerable D70 was so conservative that they changed it via a firmware update (along with other changes). You would be bummed if the display said 5 shots left, and you missed out on a once-in-a-lifetime shot because you could only get 4 shots.

This seems a bit over the top as well, has anyone filled a card on the D7000, how many shots did you get on it?

Who is John Galt? (Ok, that's over the top)

Each photo is gonna take a different amount of space on the memory card, and each memory card manufacturer has different usable storage on their card.

I realize that each photo is a different size, but not that different, each RAW seems to be no more than about 24MB, yet Nikon seem to be allowing for around 34MB per image.

Dad of Four is correct.

Nikon estimates are very conservative concerning LCD display of shots left. However it will continue to update as you shoot. For instance, a freshly formatted 4GB card in my D80 says I have 321 shots available in RAW mode, but after shooting 320 RAW shots my LCD display will often say I still have 80 some shots left on the card, which probably means I still have room for 90 or more. I know this from experience.

Thanks, good to no you can actually get a lot more on than they say. I never had a camera that has been so far out (this is my first Nikon).

I have a pair of 16gb cards in my D7000 and the LCD tells me that I have 449 shots but the other day after taking 320 shots it told me I still have 300 some odd shots left.

Thanks, looks like I will not have to spend too much on cards then.

Have you formatted your card? Always format the card, in camera, after deleting images. If not, there is risk that certain areas of the card are un-accessible for image storing.

Yes, I always format the card when removing images.

I got an 8GB ADATA card which displays 226 remaining after format but was able to get 408 images when full with 14 bit RAW images.
