XZ-1 Firmware 1.2

They trying hard to find who leaked this FW from their secret underground lab in Germany ;)
It sounds like someone in the manufacturing is playing a practical joke, on April 1st.
I have a first answer from the Olympus support concerning my question about Firmware 1.2:

"Können Sie uns bitte einen Screenshot von dem Update-Versuch über den Updater schicken?"

what means as much as "Please be so kind and send us a screenshot of the updating process in the Camera Updater!"

I've had XZ-1 hang after trying to cancel a botched pano series by pressing power button. Had to remove the battery to set things right.

A few Minutes ago I got a reply from the Olympus Customer Service:

Guten Morgen Herr Mxxxxx,

For those who don't understand German I will give a short translation:

Good morning Mr. Mxxxxx

thank you for the screenshot.

Firmware Version 1.2 is the current firmware version for the XZ-1, which is not available for download till now. The differences between version 1.1 and 1.2 are marginal, but detailed information will be available only after the update is published.

with kind regards

^ I think companies release firmware updates due to bugs and unintended operation first. The updates everyone wants are not bug fixes just enhancements.

Having been in the software QA (quality assurance) business, a bug fix or two is easy to test. Demo that a problem exists without the fix, then demo that the problem is gone with the fix.

When a release has major enhancements, a major regression test needs to be done, i.e. the enhancements need to be proven to work properly, but all other functions need to be retested to assure that the enhancements did not break anything else. You'd be surprised how often this happens in software development.

Looks like we're still in the UAT phase at present, but one of the big bosses at Olympus wouldn't move on the production release date ;-)

I would be surprised if they did. Sonys going to come out with a better sensor then what's in the G12 soon enough...people are going to come would with faster glass soon enough. They needed to release it early enough to not have any competion.

Ryan,

so speakig from past experience, will olympus change features like noise reduction in firmware?

what about problems like the auto focus in video?

or will they just leave it and release a new model.... i would wait if they were going tom come out with something better than the xz-1 before october... i'm going to China and MUST have a camera by then...

Highly doubtful Olympus will release anything before october to replace the XZ-1 and there's no word yet if they will even update the firmware or when for the video and jpg adjustment. If you don't like the XZ-1 as is then just go get the LX5 or G12 if you need something right now.

...for what it's worth.

XZ-1 Firmware Ver1.2 has incorporated the following upgrade.

[Modification]
Pic Orientation has been added to the Camera Menu.
(Note)

The orientation detection device may not operate as intended in some shooting conditions.
This function can be turned off or on.

In playback, the orientation of an image can be rotated by using the control ring. The desired orientation is then saved in the Exif file.
[Caution]

The camera's settings are cleared when firmware version 1.1 or earlier is updated.

-It seems a long shot to hope for a rev. 2.0 f/w update though.
-More probability of an Olympus XZ-2 reincarnation next year.

Still, I think Olympus got many things right with this camera, the bright and sharp lens is important and opens up new possibilities, together with the speedy response of the TruePic™ V image processor. It's possible to work around most of it's deficiencies, if you're willing to.....

Much have been said about the noise & smearing issues but the latest XZ-1 1.2 firmware update is disappointing and does not resolve such problem . Olympus , are you listening ?

If Oly comes out with a XZ-2 with tons of FW improvements

And tells the XZ-1 owners to go bang themselves

(A $500 prosumer camera, one expects some level of support and reasonable fixes & updates more so than say a $179 P&S throwaway)

It will be the last Oly I ever buy.

I am with you !

Olympus programer needs to deliver in their firmware update, otherwise $500 is A LOT for this !

People will consider olympus a joke if they don't and just releases XZ-2

Gotta wait for a new sensor first...otherwise there wouldn't be an improment. Im sure a better FW update is coming. I don't forsee another xz model till 2013.

Based on what? BTW, nothing seriously wrong with the current sensor.

I think that's what he's saying. What would an XZ-2 bring to the table? Not a better sensor. Not a better lens.....so keeping the XZ-1 around and fixing the firmware makes more sense.

XZ-2 In My opinion
12 Megapixel
1080p video
Same lens
AEF/AFL button

Yep, Thats what i was saying.

Id personally rather see these specs.

8MP For better base and high ISO.(Though 10 seems to be a nice medium)
1080P video(or higher)
24-110 lens thats just as bright or brighter....(1.4 on the wide end)
Better in body stabilization...(3-4 stops would be nice.)
ISO button on the top of the camera!!!
Adjustable 4 stop ND filter(2 stop 3 stop 4 stop)
