First photos online from Nevada at http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandyfleischmann Yesterday was hottest day thus far in 2011 in Las Vegas, about 93 degrees in shade of which there is very little... I've always wondered where this Rocky Gap Rd. road/trail leads in Red Rock Canyon, Willow Springs area, towards the geologically interesting Keystone thrust fault where much older Cambrian limestone has been faulted on top of newer Aztec sandstone (the red and/or white rocks of Red Rock Canyon).

We now know... it goes on and on...for me it was hard stony walking, so we only made it to the 'wash' I shot the SD14 with 28-70mm EX and DP1 for wide angle, quickly processed these in SPP4.0. As usual my DP1 is slightly too magenta and the SD14 probably slightly too yellow. SD14 I incorrectly had in ISP200, sigh, but at least it increased my shutter speeds considerably, some breeze in the brush.
More photos later today, after a meeting of husband's friends group.
Best regards, Sandy

Sandy,

I'd take the 93 in the shade. I leaned out the back door this morning and snapped a photo showing 2" of snow. Ugh!

We found snow today up the mountains in the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas. Beautiful scenery around Mt. Charleston. I used the DP1 and DP2, just didn't use the SD14. Many more photos on http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandyfleischmann also from yesterday around the Spring Mountain Ranch, owned now as a public park, formerly privately owned at the base of the mountains.

This is a DP1 shot:

But it's not even 5mp, it can't possibly take good pictures!! :P

Great shots Sandy :)
Can't wait to find some more scenic surroundings to use my DP1 in.

I'm very pleased with the results from all 3 cameras, SD14, DP1, DP2 in the Valley of Fire today, especially on the trail to Mouse's Tank, in what's called Petroglyph Canyon. I hadn't been there previously, and I've never seen more prehistoric petroglyphs in one place...hundreds, if not a thousand. Here's a SD14 photo at the Mouse's Tank/Petroglyph Canyon trailhead

A few more on flickr tonight; most I'll edit after we fly home on Friday.

Hi Sandy: Very nice colors on the DP shots and the SD14 has that yellow/green tint again. Nice area you are shooting there, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments, Larry. I set a custom white balance on the SD14 today at the Calico Basin .... which I'll always associate with a large (LM) panorama of the very red rocks which Sigma had on display at a PMA years ago.... and CWB for another turn around Red Rock Canyon. I'm too tired and parboiled red myself to look at them at the moment. At least I'll have lots of photos to play with at home, LOL. Mouse's Tank Petroglyph Canyon trail was the biggest hit for us this trip. One trip I want to stay up at Overton and spend lots more time in the Valley of Fire.. not to mention going to Zion, which I've never seen.

I also intend to download SPP4.2 when home.

Best regards, Sandy

Thanks for the comments, Stanny. Where did you visit in the east? Do you have photos online? You'd receive many suggestions for west coast from the Sigma users here, I'd imagine. I'm in the Washington, DC, area, so the US southwest is always fascinating to me... such different geography, geology, history, flora and fauna, etc.

We flew OVER the storms in the US midwest last night, saw lots of lightening (luckily far below us) around the time of the bad storms in the St. Louis Missouri area... which even hit the airport! There were people lined up by us for a flight into St. Louis; I'm glad we were going farther to Virginia!

One thought this morning. I'm eagerly awaiting the SD1... but my photo situations on the entire trip could have been handled easily by the DP1 + DP2 ... without a DSLR. I shot the SD14 99% of the time with my 28-70mm EX. I carried (or rather my husbad did ;-) my 10-20mm EX, but didn't use it once. I carried the 105mm EX for mid-tele and macro and used it only for one or two test shots, mainly to set the custom wb. The DP1 and DP2 performed beautifully, make a good combo, and are a heck of a lot lighter than carrying SD14 + lenses.

I had polarizers for all cameras and ND filters along but didn't feel the need to use them once. The sky is often truly that intense blue that you see in my photos... without any filtration other than the UV filter I have on the 28-70mm EX mainly to protect the lens. BTW that was useful as lens protection, as there was often very high wind with blowing sand. I kept the hood on the DP1, which I used a lot on this trip, but often don't use too much at home. I don't have a second hood for the DP2.. but I should get one for lens protection in the situations when I'm shooting both DP1 + DP2. I tried to be careful of the DP2 lens uncovered in my bag. I didn't put the cap on and off, would have been useful to have a second hood.

I used my monopod, which serves me too as a walking stick. I didn't take a tripod. If/when I'm shooting the SD1, I'll probably need to improve my habits and use a tripod.

The DP1 + DP2 colors look great right out of the camera + minor edits in SPP. The SD14 output is going to need more extensive color editing in SPP on my part to bring it to match the DP colors.
