I was trying to shoot baby owls in their nest using the canon 70-300 with a 1.4 conversion lens, picture quality was more than disappointing. What lens should I be looking for?

What is happening? Samples?

To be honest an 800 5.6 is never long enough :)

Seriously though determine a budget and get the longest lens you can....There are more factors that go into it but the 400 5.6/100-400 is a good place to start...

What's wrong with the quality?

I have a Tamron 70-300 VC USD, and occasionally I use it with a 2x Kenko Pro TC. This is a fairly cumbersome combo, as it needs MF and a reasonable amount of light to work well, but I'm very happy with the image quality nevertheless.

Here is a wide-open shot @ 600mm. This is cropped and slightly oversharpened.

Here is the full image.

Hope these help.

Here are 2 samples, I was looking for more detail when cropped all I get is a blurry picture.

Maybe I'm expecting too much?

you are always going to have trouble focusing and getting sharp photos through branches. BTW, those are beautiful photos for what they are.

maybe you are. i don't think these are all that bad for this distance. you have what, the bird filling 10% of full frame? i also think you don't have focus exactly on the birds, so you could do a little better.. with all the branches and the distance, tripod and manual focus would be the route for best possible focus. or manual without the tripod if you are much better than i am at holding steady while adjusting focus.

When you say 1.4 conversion lens, what do you mean - is it a 1.4x extender or some type of front lens?

If a 1.4x extender, who made it/what model?

I think that is more likely the source of any quality issues.

You are looking for lots of detail, cropping heavily, with a 7D at ISO 3200 and f20?

Yes, you are expecting too much, I believe :)

The longest prime lens you can afford, obviously.

Tough shot of those owls. A ladder and a chain saw might be required to get close enough to produce anything approaching expectations. ;-)
