Hello all,

In another thread was asked for Sigma 50-500 sample shots.
Sorry for all the images, but this lens is worth it ;-)))
Some images may be posted her before, but here they are for the "newbies" ...

Kind regards,
Jaja

Post some full 100% images or 100% crop of images to show the real quality. These look like they've had quite a bit of PS loving with USM and resizes. EXIF data would be nice too.

Thanks!

Hello 'Ozy',

I can't post crops since I'm "at work" ;-)))
So I don't have the originals over here ...

PS? Ok, here is what I did:
  • a little USM with these parameters: Amount 100%, Radius 1, Threshold 3
  • a little more contrast
That's all - my "standard" post processing
These images are also on Belgium Digital (BD crew albums - Canon D60)
The exif-info is dsplayed in the albums ...

Kind regards,
Jaja

Hello Reuven Levitt,

Yes, the Sigma can autofocus without any problems.
Sigma uses a little trick to autofocus at f6.7.
The lens "fools" the camera by pretending it's f5.6 ...
All the above photos were taken using autofocus - and I always use autofocus.

Here's another image at 500mm:

Even when the subject is moving away very fast (the powerboat), autofocus is doing a great job.

Except when using the Sigma 2xconverter, autofocus isn't possible.
Here's an example of the 50-500 + 2xconverter (=1.000mm).

All shown images were taken handheld - no tripod.

Kind regards,
Jaja

These photos look great and always tempt me to buy this lens. Also, I'd be dissapointed if you didn't take advantage of PS. I do with every single photo I take with my D60. You also have to remember that it's Jaja taking these photos who is probably in the upper 3 percentile of photographers when it comes to framing and capturing the action. So you have to compensate for this as well.

Hi Jaja, I always love seeing your work. Thanks for taking the time to post these shots again. I have planned on ordering this lens within the next week. Should be fun, even if it is the size of a Howitzer ;) If all goes well, I hope to give you some friendly competition soon my friend.
Thanks again Jaja. Keep up your great work.

I was on the fence about getting this, but I am sold now. Jaja, you should get a commision from Sigma for all the lenses you are selling. Great looking shots too.

Never argue with an idiot. they will drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience. ;-)

Hello Bill,

Yes, f6.3 at 500mm ...
But that's no problem, even in our "not that sunny" Belgium.
I often use ISO200/400 at 500mm and the image quality remains great ...

Hiya Jaja,

I converted from the E10 to the D30. And I may very well have to get this after I get the 550EX. Not sure how it would work shooting custom fashion dolls (16" dolls like Barbie). ;)

Thanks for the examples.

Hello TonyK_in_Texas,

... and so we meet again over here ;-)))

I also have the 550EX and despite of what some experience, I have no problems with that flash. It does a perfect job in "flash" mode and as fill-in.

I even use it with the Sigma 50-500 at 500mm (indoor and ourdoor as fill-in for close-ups at 500mm).

Kind regards,
Jaja

Reuven, your images are amazing, great subjects, wonderful compositions, light is near perfect on most and colors are wonderful. I am very glad to have the chance to look at them. One question though? which items were shot with the 50-500 lense? (any? all?).. if so, can you share some of your experience with it a- same as Ozi haverequested from Jaja b- how do you handletheweight?

thanks again - what a joy it was

Ruvy

Jaja, will all the deep respect I have for your talent, can you explain how do you hand hold this monster? I find even 200mm teleshowing up minor hand shakes and general body motion/vibs. perheps I am doing something wrong and will love to improve

thanks

Hello Ruvy,

It has a lot to do with the perfect balance of the camera+lens.

The Sigma 50-500 has a percet "tripod mount", but also perfectly suitable as handhold support ...

Now, one need of course "a decent" shutterspeed, but I managed once a close-up of an elephant at 500mm at 1/80 sec ...
And practicing is also a "must" ...

Kind regards,
Jaja
thanks

Evening,

I am torn between the Metz 45 CL-4 and the 550EX. I would have to get the cable adapter for the 550 as I use a Stroboframe. The Metz has a bracket and a sync. I would not feel the need to get the Metz 3102 attachment just yet.

What do you think of the two flashes? My current flash is a Vivitar 285 HV.

Thanks,
... and so we meet again over here ;-)))

Jaja:

I was the one who originally asked for some pics. I wish I could post a pic of my expression when the images first appeared on the screen! Wow! Very impressive shots! I remember some of your work when you were active on the Olympus E-10 forum. Keep up the fine work, and thanks for posting the images.

Best,

Troy
