EVIL cannot be ingored, nor can it be defeated. The manufacturers, and the DP Review staff will learn the lesson of the bicycle manufacturers who tried to ignore the tag "mountain bike." EVIL will triumph. DP Review should have included it anyway, just to see how many EVIL fans there are among us.

How about it? Add EVIL and let's see what WE prefer. It's an acronym, for God's sakes, not a devil worshipping cult.

What about this: TTSIL (true through sensor interchangeable lens)?

first, we need a proper name as suggested by dpreview.
im sure all the manufacturers dont want to sell an "evil" camera..
literally speaking that is.

take a look at the most recent statistic.
Canon at top of the manufacturers in terms of sale.
followed by sony and then nikon.
the reason canon is at the top is because they produce good dslr and p&s both.
while sony have a good dslr, so-so p&s and a powerful mirrorless( u know it).

but nikon falls behind just because they only have great dslrs but not so good p&s.

Now that nikon aware of the fact that EVIL sells, they want in..

Although they are probably right in guessing that manufacturers would avoid using the term 'EVIL' DPR were perhaps too 'sensible' in eliminating it as an a naming option.

The problem however is with this kind of vote people often cast their votes in a joking or malicious manner & any such results would be suspect & unhelpful.

It has definitely got to the stage when this category of camera needs a recognisable name , SLT seems to have gained acceptance & I think that MILC will be generally adopted even by those who have high cholesterol levels :)

None of these names, except MILC, were in the poll.

I have seen previous threads on this, but why is it so hard?

SLR became the mainstay of old, with dSLR being its modern version

I would vote for these acronyms:
  • SLR = Single Lens Reflex
  • SLT = Single Lens Translucent
  • SLM = Single Lens Mirrorless
if you like, you can still refer to them as dSLR, dSLT, and dSLM.

At least this is simple and consistent, the SL has become a 'type' and the 'X' its technology: rotating, fixed or no mirror.

Sony is using SLT for its aXX line, it is a small step for SLM. I understand that the SLR guys will push back, but come on - they both use the same sensor AND lenses nowadays.

-Also, whether we need designations such as Compact (smaller sensor?) or Fixed (e.g. Fuji X100) is questionable.

Why did this issue never come up for Range Finder cameras?

My original post was partially in jest. It means nothing to me what these are called, and even attempting to label a genre of cameras with such a broad array of features and designs is ridiculous. One term that will describe a Panny GH2 and Sony NEX? Really?

Long live EVIL.

While I can understand your wish for consistency & simplicity - SLM , like its counterparts SLR etc is actually slightly incomplete & misleading because they are NOT 'Single' lens cameras as the key point is that they can take multiple interchangeable lenses( IL) . I agree that acronyms have to be understood in a particular context but there is no harm in making the terms as explicit as possible.

I agree that C should not represent Compact as there is no reason why there cannot be mirrorlesss FF models - I take C as meaning Camera ( not Camcorder :) )

I would argue that MILC covers range finders as well. A Leica M8 or M9 (or IIIF for that matter) is a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera.

Nex-5 with kit lenses, Contax G 35, and a number of legacy lenses (mostly Canon FD)

I am sure that Canon and Nikon already consider these cameras as evil

I think that this was written/edited by a dSLR person:

EVIL.....Stupid name
+1

Shouldn't we call the NEX a EDIL (D= Display)?
Isn't the LCD pretty much the same as an EVF except for size and placement?
I prefer just "system camera" as we call it in germany. This term can be translated in every language, while EVIL is realyy stupid.
That's my point. Why label them at all? From my point of view, EVIL is just as good/bad as any other name. Can any single name describe both the Panasonic GH2 and Sony NEX? Nah...

"true through sensor interchangeable lens" ???

Good grief, that's desperation :-(

Hard to fathom? my deepest condolences. :O
What exactly does the phrase "true through sensor" mean? Very clumsy wording, if nothing else.
