MichaelT has been banned!!!

When you separate the wheat from the chaff, there's a fine line in many instances between advertising and information.

Believe me, it's an interesting fine line. By law our state lottery here is forbidden from "advertising" but can disseminate information (and, to be truthful, it sure looks like advertising most of the time to me).

Bringing it down to the forum level, I can see some examples where it's more informative than promotional:

1. With the shortage of D60 kits, a post about the fact that they are in stock at a certain place.

2. Release of an update to software or new software relevant to users.

3. Information about a new product.

Sometimes it's a very fine line, to be sure.

HA! So true!

Welcome back. (Slaps hand with a wet noodle).

PS -- Next time, just give Lee Rothman a free version of the
software, and you can get all the free advertising you need. ;)
So I would request that we let this thread die, and that we get
back to discussing photography and the tools and techniques that
will improve our work and enhance our creativity and efficiency.

All right, who has their hand on my bum? ;)

I'm glad to see MichaelT back.
The post that I made regarding Archive Creator was against the
rules. I made the post based on a misunderstanding that it was OK
to do so. This mis-understanding was a mistake on my part. Phil's
action to ban me, (while extreme IMHO) was within his rights and
within the rules and I have no qualms about that at this time.

Phil and I have now had constructive dialog about this and I am
clear as to the rules that he expects to be followed.

I am glad to be back and plan to continue to participate in an
active manner within the rules of the forum.

I hold no ill will as to anyone who complained about the offending
post. I have requested Phil to remove posts in the past (for
different reasons) and it is within everyone's rights to do so.

To those who had kind things to say about me and my products, I
thank you.

So I would request that we let this thread die, and that we get
back to discussing photography and the tools and techniques that
will improve our work and enhance our creativity and efficiency.

Respectfully,

Michael Tapes

Kiran P,

Indeed, a great strategy, though I would modify it a bit.

Phil needs to create a separate PayPal storefront for his "forum" stores, withhold a small fee, and generate a bit of addition income. But I would skip "advertising" in the forums. A simple URL link is best.

I manufacture things, but, it's not really worthwhile to advertise, as the income doesn't justify the risk. If Phil had a the equivalent of a "consignment" store, even if that was nothing but a link to my site, I suspect that I would be quite pleased to use the service.

Yes, Michael Tapes has been banned from posting in all forums on
DPReview.
Best would be for Michael Tapes to just create his own website with his own forum. Then he could say anything he wants.

If you are all so mad at Phil, why not just go elsewhere, too.

Apparently there is a feeling that Phil's site is a great resource but that Phil is no good. Phil, I must remind you, is the one who makes the site great. It's his site, it provides an extremely valuable service and I wish all naysayers would just go elsewhere or stick to technical/photographic sugjects and lay off the politics and mud slinging!
