Hi everebody,

I can't open 60D raw files in Camera Raw in Photoshop CS3. I guess, I need to upgrate Camera Raw files, any suggestions or dirrections?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Hello Vic,

Camera Raw in CS3 and CS4 can not be updating to process CR2 files from the 60D.

I know this first hand as I am a 60D owner. The no cost option is to download the free DNG converter from Adobe and then you can use your current copy of CS3.

Here is a link about the DNG file format: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ you will find links here for the converter for windows or mac machines.

Other options would be to purchase Adobe LightRoom ver 3.3 or of course upgrading to CS5.

The latest version of Photoshop Elements will also open CR2 files, but since you have CS3, I do not see this as an option, but you of course will have to decide what works for you.

Good Luck...

Regards,

Paul

You can also use the software that came with your 60D to open and process raw files. Not ideal if you're used to photoshop, but at least you have the capacity to process.

I convert my 60d files to DNG using the free converted at work since I only have CS3. At home I have CS5 so I don't need to do it there.

I had the same problem when I bought my 60d. I used the converter a few times but it was such a hassle I ended up buying Lightroom 3. It took me a few weeks to get use to lightroom but wow it's a great program when it comes to developing images it has more options than photoshop and is a lot faster. If you upload images to facebook or flickr the uploader is built into LR. you don't have to convert your raw into a jpg and then upload. Just drag the raw files into a folder for facebook and hit upload. LR does the rest.

Thanks a lot Paul. I like "one stop shopping".

Thanks Scott, is this DNG converter stay along program?

How you actually convert them?

It's just a simple box when you open the converted program. You select the ones you want to convert. There are few options, though you can "embed" the original RAW file inside the DNG if you want, but will double its size. You hit convert and it chews on them and spits them out in the directory of your choice. You then can open the DNG files in PS3 RAW and edit them as if they were RAWS. It takes very little time and saves you several hundred dollars in Adobe license fees.

Im using the DNG convertor at the moment as I cant process my new raw 60D images in PSE7.

Its fine for now, but can see its going to be a bit painful long term.

Thinking I will upgrade to CS5 soon. I didnt realise latest Elements could do it and I love the idea of a built in uploader in LR. Might give that a look too.

Thanks Scott, I got it.

In retouching forum somebody mentioned that after converting images sometimes became more noisy, is it truth?

If you are ever going to upgrade Photoshop, you might want to do it now. I have heard that you can only upgrade from two generations ago, i.e., you can upgrade CS3 to CS5 but can't upgrade from CS2 to CS5. So if Adobe maintains this policy you will not be able to upgrade to CS6 when it comes out.

Thanks CameraCarl, but after spend money for 60D set, CS5 kind of out of my budged, if you can convince my wife :), I will be greatly appreciate, otherwise I will be in big trouble.

Thanks, but I don't think that LR has more options than PS. I like PS and as more I use as more I learn, I don't use Facebook either. But thanks for your reply.

If your into PS filters and using layers than PS is definitely better. There are some images that export from LR into PS but it is very few. I still us PS when I need to build webpages or convert RGB images to CMYK for marketing ads. I'm not sure if you can adjust the color temperature on a jpg in photoshop but it is possible in LR. LR also has presets which I use all the time. The preset will get me close and then I tweak the picture from there. I find my workflow is a lot faster using LR than it was using PS or Canon Digital Photo Professional.

My big complaint about Lightroom is that I have to import all images into LR before I can work on them. I can't just open and image from the hard drive. I have to import it into the program which is a little slower.

If I were you I'd just download a free 30 day trial of PS and LR so that you can compare them.

Yes, I'm a lot in retouching, layers and masking are just to start with. In my opinion if you working with to different programs like Photoshop and LR (I have CS2, CS3 and LR2), you can't master yourself adequate in both, but if you work just with one, you can learn from your mistakes from each step that you did prior and improve yourself for the next time, but it is just me, may be not so multitasking :).

Under the Tools menu in DPP is "Transfer to Photoshop". It will open your image as a TIF file. I've only done it a few times and don't know if that's good or bad (that's for you to decide) but it is an option. I too have a 60D, DPP, and CS3 Photoshop and just recently realized that my raw files don't open in PS. I thought something was wrong with my computer.

I always use DPP anyway so it doesn't really matter to be honest. DPP just works for me, especially with batch processing - SO easy and fast. The "recipe" function is fantastic as well for pictures which require similar processing.

I do this all the time, DPP to PS-CS3. It works quite well although I have to close and reopen PS-CS3 every so often as it seems to not clean up memory as more and more photos are edited.

Vic.

I've had a similar problem with PS in years past when I used it before converting over to DPP for the vast majority of my post processing. Random freezes... Good to know I wasn't the only one!
