canon kit lens 18-55 or 50mm 1.8??

If you have to ask then get the kit lens. It's more appropriate for general use.

The 50mm f1.8 would be a reasonable choice if you understand the limitation of z fixed focal length. In particular you have no option for getting a wide angle shot, as you would with the 18-55.

does it give better low light quality?
The 50mm f1.8 can gather more light, although you need understand the downside is that using it to do so ( at widest apertures ) will also make focusing more critical due to a thing called depth of field.
does it have the same zoom?
A 50mm f1.8 has no zoom at all. It's a fixed focal length.

Given you ask this question you really ought to do more reading on photography before buying anything.

You will be incredibly limited in what you can photograph with just the 50mm f1.8.

If you need to ask this question, get the kit lens only or get both. Do not get the 50mm f1.8 only.

hey guys i am going to buy canon 1100d.
my question is if i should buy kit lens or 50mm 1.8 lens?
what difference do they have?
50mm is cheaper than lens kit.
get the 18-55IS - it's sharp and inexpensive when purchased with the camera. The 50mm 1.8 is also sharp but you will be very restricted shooting at only 50mm !

I second that. A 50mm was the standard lens sold with most film bodies. The advent of inexpensive zooms gave much more versatility, and so became the "kit" lens on many bodies. It's still true today. There are instances where a fast 50mm lens pays dividends, but overall, a kit zoom is versatile enough to handle most day-to-day shooting scenarios. Start there, and add lenses as the need and budget allow.

go for the kit lens. dont go for 50mm alone. it has zero zoom...that is what ever you see through the viewfinder will be fixed, the same thing you will be able to shoot, if u want to shoot a far off object, you will literally have to walk to it with the 50mm lens. though its an excellant value for money....but better suited for low light photography.....and ofcourse better lights....

i too just bought a eos 500d with the lens kit. bought the 50mm after that....and now seems like you too will end up buying the same....:-) and then a telepohto lens (55-250mm IS lens) may be....... cos the kit lens also has a limited zoom, in point and shoot terms, say 3x..... its becoming a costly hobby.....

I suggest you to go through the photography basics in the internet, or read books or online videos. This will help you save you money and time. You will be confident of what you are doing. nevertheless u can always ask for advice.

Go for the lens kit.

with the FIXED ZOOM 50mm f1.8 lens your view will be limited, narrow ......this will not help you at all to take closeup shoots.......
