Well , great imagination at least, take a look at these concept photos:

They are from my friend Abel at Tecnofotografia (awesome designer and photographer)

http://www.tecnofotografia.com/ (see his web site with a lot of renderings and details but in spanish)

Here is the camera with its detachable wireless screen, you can control de camera from the untethered screen:

Here you can see the movable grip for easy using:

Detachable grips made of various textures and materials... how about colors, perhaps cammo ?

I wish nikon hired him for design, great ideas, look at his other renderings like the sony, they are awesome.

Well Don't send the link to Nikon now, they might like it so much that and might decide to scrap their design and we will have to wait even longer to get the new cam. : )

i don't like it

some of the lines are too canon like for my tastes.

and the buttons at the back look messy.

i'm happy with Nikon sticking with one of the most legendary car designers of our time for their designs, and the engineers mostly do a good job making the button placement comfortable.

I sure hope not. I would not buy it !

Nice work overall but

It's got a DX lens on it

The individual grooves for each finger on the grip are not practical and too regimented. People have different sized fingers and often hold the camera in different ways. Have you ever lay on your belly and shot an SLR while supporting yourself with your elbows? Your wrist would be at a very awkward and uncomfortable angle to fit your fingers in those grooves.

The main reason I opted for the D700 was because it has a small footprint for a full frame camera.

I know these are only mock ups, but if Nikon produced a D800 like that, I would not be running to buy one - too big, too bulky and too many gimmicks I suspect.

In the text, the designer said it was a tad larger than the D7000, that means that it is smaller or same size than the D700.

I think that we are missing the whole point...
One of the Factors is the removable wireless controller, that is a great idea.

The second is flexibility , low angles... I would think that shooting macro with a design like this would be a back saver.

The removable Front and back grips sound awesome, I think it would be great marketing strategy, different textures, leathers, rubbers, finger grooves . Not to mention decoration purposes for example , I would love to see how Camouflage grips would look, or olive drab , perhaps carbon fiber look ??

I would love to see a live view AF implemented that uses another sensor like the Sony a350 or a much better AF live view and video recording would be implemented. It would be awesome that they implemented slow motion, since the sensor is so large, it would be great 60, 120, 240 frames per second video.

Another thing is built in GPS, many people would say its not necessary because they probably have not used it, but once you do, you realize how great it is.

Better weather sealing like the Olympus , that you can actually wash it under a faucet.

Its nice to dream....

I think this a great design and the detail put into it its hard not to think these are actual leaked photos of the new D800. The swivel design handgrip is ingenious for movie picture taking, however I think the red one touch movie button should be thumb operated from the top deck, while grip is in handycam mode, ie similiiar to operation of DVCAM for example. The wireless screen design has some real benefits for macro wildlife and photojournalism, be great combined with a power zoom lens and face recognition / tracking AF. Would be great to see a 4.5 inch screen with at least 720P resolution on the next Nikon. The days of 2.5,2.7 and even 3inch screens are numbered. And OMLED brightness is a must have these days. All in all a great desgin concept I am in love with.....well at least until the new full frame real Nikons come out!

The prism looks a tad small. I'm all for a smaller footprint but would still like a large, bright OVF.

I'm also all for progress so if they wanna put an EVF overlay to supplement the OVF, then excellent but as yet I still think nothing beats a great OVF.

Btw the best OVF I've used is a Contax 645 and the best EVF I've used is a GH2 and there's no comparison.

I like the detachable screen idea. Make it charge via induction or some form of near field communication to preserve weather sealing.

When detached, the free LCD doubles as a remote, including intervalometer + remote exposure settings and shutter trigger. Communication via wifi/Bluetooth or whatever is most reliable and has good range.

Not so sure bout the rotating grip though.

IMO looks crap, sorry!

Put your trust in Nikon; they will not fail you.

Give it at least 18MP and at least the same super low read noise (and resulting high DR) of the D7000, and I would write a check right now.

...we have reached the point where all digital SLRs and even the mirrorless compacts deliver image quality beyond what was possible with the smaller film formats. For me, image quality for most purposes is a foregone conclusion (even Canon's relatively noisy sensors turn out great performances in most situations). Lenses, features, handling and long-term system viability are far greater considerations.

Do you find yourself having to fret much about image quality these days?
Interesting how we're not talking about that much these days.
