Call me mad....swapping to the darkside.

I alos know that the 7D may focus better and faster BUT the 5D centre focus point is good enough for any type of photography.......if you're a decent photographer obe shot using the centre point is all thats needed IMO......
That would explain why you feel you need to crop all the time. :-)

Any decent photographer gets close enough to fill the frame, anything else is a waste of megapixels.

I'm happy with the 51 points, and using every single one of them, although mostly one at a time. I love to compose freely instead of cropping like crazy.

Sad thing you didn't try out the AF-S 300 f/4 as it is far superior to any of the zooms.

I am not debating your decision, but my two year experience with 5DmkII focusing has been not so positive as you make it sound here. In terms of focusing it is day and night difference between 5DmkII and my 1DmkIV, D3s and D7000. I lost far too many images by the focusing of the 5DmkII. I make images for newspapers and have 30+ years of photo experience. The 5DmkII just doesn't cut for me. I used it because it was the only FF body Canon offered with decent ISO. It is most certainly possible to make excellent images with the 5D, but don't bet your life on it that the next one would come out as expected.

100-400L is a nice lens, it does start to show its age when used with the 7D. On FF it is excellent. Only, it acts like a dust magnet. The pumping system has put more dust into my camera and viewfinder than any other lens I ever used. That's the downside.

BUT Canon make more affordable lenses for my budget. and the 24-105 & 100-400mm covers a great range in 2 lenses. And again....21mp is better for heavy cropping.

So..its been a brief visit here...and who knows I may well return one day.....if I win the lottery it will be a D3s and 200-400 VR ;)
ummm the D3s is still 12mp... You just sold your D700 because you didn't have the pixels, now you're saying if you had the money you'd get a D3s.

I don't understand.

Anyway have fun with the 5D, just make sure you expose to the right. The noise at base ISO is ugly, but in saying that, you do get the benefit of cropping.

Question, is cropping really important in your photography? You can't walk a bit closer and compose properly?

Cheers.

You will switch to Canon.

Fine!

And now?

Tell me: what's your point here? What do you really want by starting this thread?

best wishes and always good light

Exactly.

You've wanted to do this for a while, Fletch. Hope it goes well. My life will be too busy to follow the Canon forums so come back soon. Maybe you'll find the grass is always greener! ;-)

Fletch is a great photographer. He's put some excellent work in the D300 forum. SO I guess he was just doing what he said - saying goodbye.

If you knew his work, you'd miss him.

Why stay with one system, it's not like it's a marriage.

You'll be like an excited kid opening Christmas present. Studying and getting to know new camera is so much fun. Enjoy it~

Just Shoot !

Just kidding. Do whatever feels right! I'd like to hear from you about ergonomics, image quality, colors, details and such. In my book switch = lot of money, so there must be a good reason to make the move.

I'm with you on th theory that you are taking the pictures and the cam and lens are just the tools.

Keep us updated and please won't be shy if you feel you made a wrong turn! We won't laugh!

'Happy shooting!'

I don't blame you, I was about to do the same jump two weeks ago, but a few nights sleep over the decision has made me to stay put with my Nikon gear.
Was it because of AF-C Continuous Autofocus... ?
3D Dynamic Area was it?

Something must be happening during your sleeps :)
Not wrong there, A Nikon angel appeared to me in my sleeps.

Cute try but clearly not credible.

We all know the upgrades to each of these cameras are just around the corner.

So, sure, someone would change systems just now, just before the new cameras are out.

Sure, sure.

Yes, Canon now offers more lenses and wider variety of price ranges. And, several head-to-head specd lenses are cheaper to much cheaper with Canon. Depending on lenses you buy, you can get a good second body with Canon for the same price as Nikon kit. Hard to find any head-to-head specd lenses where Nikon is more than $100 less. If not for the D700 body at that price point, I would have gone Canon. Still might in the future if D700 replacement price/specs cannnot keep up with Canon 5dii replacement.

But I've just sold my D700 already!

Its a lens thing...... and I havent got fortunes to spend.

So I've gone to the dark side......

I'm ordering a 5D MK2 and 24-70 (or 24-105) and 100-400 IS 2 lens combo.
Nikon is considered the "dark side" because it has black all black lenses. Canon is the light/white (good guys vs. bad guys in black ;) )
I had my cheap 70-300mm VR on my FF D700 today and looking at my crops today, 12MP doesnt cut it for me.

I'm a IQ junkie and in general canon zooms are inferior (except for say the spectacular new 70-200IS2) Before I got the D3 I was tempted to go canon for the 35L, 85L, 135L and sadly for them these are still their best and the way I would go. Their 24-70 pales c/w the nikon version.

Yes I realise I love Nikon more than I thought.....

I have saved hard as well as selling my D700......

I'm also bonkers.......I admit it..a complete gearhead.....SO I have decided I'm going to invest in the one that will satisfy my needs forever....

The D3s........I will buy, shut up and be happy.

I love gear as much as taking pictures.....and I also realise that ANY half decent camera can take great pictures in the right hands.....I know I dont need the D3s to take good pictures.....BUT in my mind, its irrelevant what people say to me.....I just want to feel right.....and the D3s is where I'll be happy.....built in grip......IQ as good as it gets ( although I'd still put my D300 / 18-200 combo against it lol)

Its about self satisfaction.....once that is satisfied I can enjoy taking pictures again.....

I want the best ( I can only afford this because I sold my car!!!) having the best does not make me a better photographer....or give me better pictures .....BUT it makes me feel satisfied......and thats important to me. I have to feel at one with my camera.......and I've never really felt that since I sold my D2xs many years ago....I just love the feel of a pro body....nothing to do with IQ!

I will then save for a few lenses I need...... then just take pictures.....

when I've got it... i will be skint again..... lol but satisfied......and able to get on with my life :)

You may not understand my rambling on so sorry......
